Since we have people scared to enter the debate rounds, is taxation theft?

1} governance via democratic societies agreement has been around for some years now. { Greeks? }

2} various gang-like entities tell you to pay for protection { security }, or ive seen in the movies, that often times reflect experiences in real life { Mafia? }

3} self elected --most likely not nice King-like entity-- power based authority sets the values for your taxes { Stalin? }

4} ..?... { mom and/or dad? }

Yeah.

Its theft when the taxes are used for unjustifiable things, but what's unjustifiable is open to interpretation. Most libertarian loon ideas of theft through taxation are ridiculous

Taxation is rent to live in a country.

The terms "taxation" and "theft" are legal terms that are explicitly defined by the state's legal framework, if the state does not define taxation as theft, then it is not theft.

Would it be theft for you to use public services like roads, public safety, public education, and national defense without paying for those services?

Without taxation, how would public services be funded?

Would you prefer to live without the benefits of public services? How would that work?

Taxation is not theft whenever the end good is a necessary or obviously beneficial common enjoyed by all, with a tax burden proportionate to the benefit received.

For example, let's say everyone gives 13% of their income to support the police and the military. No one is being suckered in this arrangement. A rich man and a poor man alike get proportionately the same benefit: security to enjoy the remaining 87% of what they own, however much that is, and to continue living without fear of being murdered by a criminal or a foreign army, whatever value they assign to their own lives.

Same thing with roads. A rich man pays a greater lump sum to finance the roads, but he also enjoys greater utility from traveling on roads. For example, the opportunity to travel from point A to point B and cut a business deal or sell his specialized labor for a higher value than a poor man with lesser skills or capital. Roads mean time saved, and your time is worth whatever you'd do with it.

Taxes become theft whenever they are plainly disproportionate, or whenever they are redistributive in nature.

Well, it depends on the context. For the US, during the Biden's administration, you could say taxation was theft because they spent the fiscal money in useless stuff, like support on ilegal inmigrants, or financing for sex change on trans people (aka gender-affirming surgery according to the woke language), and other things that woke people like to do.

Reasonable taxation is necessary for a civilization to run. But America taxes the crap out of people, I think income tax is out right theft

I agree taxation is not theft. I give you credit there. If I give too much , give me a credit refund.

It's theft because the bill is too high. Ok .

If it was truly useless, why not protest about it?

@linate

If it's truly unjustified, there should be some protest about it.

No, it's that when they tax you on something four or five times.

Taxation is straight-up tyranny of the majority. Asking 2 wolves and a sheep what's for dinner.

The alternative to taxation is enduring a squalid existence, living in a cardboard box, in the backwoods, eating grass.

Taxation is theft when there is no representation. Giving money to illegal aliens is theft of tax dollars. Or giving money to NGO's who go to other counties and pay for absurd shit that has nothing to do with anything with the legitimate functions of Govt. Fully half of all money spent by govt is spent on non legitimate functions of govt. In the past there was a thing that was called discretionary spending but that was meant to be used if there was a surplus of taxes. That no longer happens. Govt barrows 60 cents of every dollar it spends so technically there can be no discretionary spending. So any money spent on non legitimate functions of govt is theft and fraud as there is no money to be spent on discretionary items. So yes, most taxation is theft. Not all but 60% is.

Good summary Sadolite.

Another avenue that uses much money is aka the darker side of nation governance in Netflix documentary 'American Conspiracy. Wow!

Started watching it. Sort of mind blowing historical stuff of which on the Iran-contrac Regan affair was I familiar with. 4 episodes. I think.

But it's not theft , right. Not questioning the fairness. No such thing in this life. We're all under the system of monetary supremacy. Don't even think about what is fair.

But no theft.

I guess you're owned a 60 percent tax refund.

Outside of that , you render unto Caesar what is Caesar's.

no, it is worse. 2 wolves and a sheep is a lot more than just taking something. It's a system of eternal oppression.

@Mal

No, I expect nothing from govt and don't want anything to do with that maggot infested entity. I'd just as soon sell my soul to the devil than rely on anything from the govt other than infrastructure which is the only way it can be built. But with that said what is built is done so in the most inefficient corrupt and costly manner the people in charge of it should be hanged.

If taxation was simple theft, it would be far more tolerable than what it actually is, a system of control and oppression. At least with simple theft the evil ends when the theft ends. I would be far more comfortable seeing taxes go straight into the leader's pockets instead of the monsterous machine. At least that way, we could have a chance for mercy.

No such thing as justified theft. Theft is unjustified. It's either theft or it's not. It's either unauthorized or it's not.
