New feature: Sensitive content filtering

Hmm. Looks like this feature, when enabled, hides entire threads. I guess that shouldn't surprise me.

It only hides the thread if the post itself is marked as offensive. Not just any individual comments in the thread.

Sensitive content is the realm of the overly sensitive.

And also becomes the realm of dictatorial censorship.

As long as one can opt in or opt out,

Seems alright to me.

Though I suppose one can argue the person being censored 'can't opt in or out, (Though they 'can opt in or out of the site)

The human desire to monitor and censor is insidious.

Freedom of speech and expression is already widely subject to limitations.

An individual has the right and the ability to ignore, this should be content filtering enough.

But of course, they don't want to ignore, they enjoy making songs and dances and scoring points.

I don't think it does much more than 'current society, 'less really.

In 'real life society, a person can't go around nude in many places, or be shouting in the library.

What is offered here is earpieces and sunglasses, to visually and audially tune the problem people out.

Yet, the problem individuals are 'still 'there, nude and shouting, 'unlike real life.

I imagine there are internet locations 'more free of censorship than here.

An online debating forum is an exchange of narratives, oftentimes contentiously, but where naked and shouting is not an option.

And discrimination is arbitrary.

Hmmmmm contention, isn't that the whole focus of a debate?

Seems somewhat counterintuitive to filter out one side of the argument.

The filtering is 'voluntary though,

It gives people the 'option to avoid people and posts they'd rather avoid.

They don't 'have to turn the "hide offensive content." on.

I'd also argue that naked and shouting 'are options.

Whether in text, or as we have 'now, easily posted pictures.

In a 'sense, images and even 'text can be 'visual noise, shouting.

Bold print, ALL CAPS, An individual spamming words everywhere.

Take ads for instance, were they 'everywhere in society, every wall and surface, even if just 'print, bit like shouting there.

. . . The 'purpose of large signs in protests, 'is to shout through the written word.

. . . Profiles pictures were regulated on DDO and DART, so too various 'questionable 'contents of words.

If anything this system allows people to post 'more than they would be able to without it.

As 'without this system, posts might be 'removed, not hidden from the sight of those who 'choose the 'option of block offensive content.

We definitely need a see/hide pictures option, simply because they can quickly clog up a thread. (See DebateIsland)

Also, while we're at it, it would be better if after posting a comment, the page returned to the ongoing discussion rather than to the beginning.

The idea about hiding sensitive content was to please both sides, pro censorship and pro free speech. Anyone pro free speech can still see all posts.

I would prefer something like a spoiler.

Hidding sounds like censoring, imfho.

It's not censoring as it's completely voluntary. By default sensitive content is visible. If you don't want to see it it's easy to switch out

Why would anyone willfully give up their "being offended" weapon?

As an experiment, I've engaged the offensive comment restriction just to see how it might affect my debate with RationalTheist, "Resolved: This house would legalize prostitution in the United States" because my R1 argument may ride on the rough edge. Nope, still clean, because I attempted merely innuendo. However, I note the post #4 by MikeLifts has been tagged, and I see there is an option to view it, which I guess is a temporary override without changing the profile setting.

On what basis you mark a post as offensive? What is offensive for you?

By the way, I see this new feature is not ready. I marked my previous post as offensive and I can't turn it off. Lol.

i believe savant is still working on it but yes. A post should be able to be marked offensive by mods if we don’t want people to see it, or by yourself if you don’t want to see it. A large portion of this still is in alpha so we are still adjusting

offensive will be based off the coc poll results which largely seems to be racial slurs not used to attack a member (that is a warning and a ban), certain taboo topics, etc.

it’s a middle ground for not just removing posts outright or warning or banning people. You can opt in to what you see but yes we largely dictate what is considered offensive with feedback from the poll

There isn't anything that will offend me.

But there are people who enjoy being offended, and who enjoy using offence as a weapon against alternative opinion and free speech.

Offence is more so, a self generated response to an incoming data signal, rather than generated data output.

That is to say that the offended is most likely to be the creator the offence.
