These will be my first debates on the site, looking forward to it!

Two things to add:

Whether you participate in the debates or not, please work on that quiz and submit new topics. We have added quite a few, but we could always use a broader set.

Also, voters! I will vote on those debates I can find time for even as a participant, and we’re going to need others to step up and cast votes as well.

That's the beauty of ultrarated debates. You have to judge 4 ultrarated debates to start a new ultrarated debate (or less if there are less than 3 debates in voting phase). And each debate gets 3 votes.

It's the same with submitting topics, people will have to submit 5 topics before they can do an ultrarated debate. That's how the credits system works.

I'm interested in joining (new to this site, but I did irl debate for a few years so I know the basics). How long will the round times be? I'd prefer one week to allow for more thorough research but understand if that might be a bit long.

3 days, though the format for Ultrarated debates is open to changing in the future.

Good point, still getting used to how this process works.

So to even be elligble to proceed to the next round we would have to vote on a fellow participants debates?

5 topics before your first ultrarated debate, or 5 topics for each one?

You need x number of credits for each one. For example, to get four vote credits, you ask it to assign you a debate to vote on four times. And if there's nothing in the queue, you get a free credit.

I am ardently against the idea of credit system on precept. You get people being activist for (debates in this case) clauses that they may have no intrest in.

A meritocracy debating format, that can encourage elitism. despite what previous websites may have shown, elitism and meritocracy have no value in the forum of ideas.

Call it whatever you want. Frankly its just a form of gate keeping.

These are two different things, so I'm not sure I understand? The credit system requires voting/contributing topic proposals in order to debate. You don't have to defend positions at all to earn credits, in fact debating costs credits.

Frankly its just a form of gate keeping.

Other debate formats will still exist.

Though I don't stand a chance against most of the participating debaters I'll give it a shot.

Thank you to everyone who signed up! As a first order of business, you'll all need to have 3 topic credits and 4 vote credits. To get those, go to your profile > badges, and click earn vote credit/topic credit. Since there are no ultrarated debates needing votes right now, you'll just get 4 free temporary vote credits. To earn topic credits, you'll have to propose a topic (but it doesn't matter if it's accepted or not).

You may need to take quizzes before you can earn credits, but they should be pretty easy. All the answers are basically on the rubric.
