Why is debatecraft better than debateart?

I'll let him correct me if I'm wrong, but the people who more or less ran DART (if I remember right not on the technical end but on most/all others) decided to abandon it and make this.

Its because owner of debate art went missing, and site crashed multiple times, and was impossible to update. this site was made at a time when debate art crashed and didnt work for like whole week. Now it works again, but cant tell when it will crash, and still cant do updates.

It Wasn’t made to pass up or be superior to debate art, just a new home for a community where the owner of the last one abandoned it. We are all just refugees from an older site called debate.org, who transitioned to debateart, then to here.

Though the policy around moderation is much better here than DART in my opinion.

Because it actually has people on it.

DebateArt currently works well in an independent wilderness sort of way, less right wing tyranny.

So DebateArt is not worse than...Rather, just a more ethereal alternative too...Like relaxing alone in a cargo ship in outer space, with no monsters on board.

I do make promises, just as I promised site will be better with more free speech. When one manages the site, one must think what one wants to see, and then try to achieve that. Any rule which doesnt achieve a goal is a bad rule. Its why true code of conduct must be about goals, not rules. Rules can fail when conditions change. But goals stay same even when conditions change, just behavior adapts to conditions to better achieve same goals.

this is why taoism teaches to adapt to achieve a goal, not stick to strict rules which dont always achieve goal.

I haven’t used both sites much as I only had a handful of debates on debate art. One thing I do miss about the old site was the multiple criterion voting. I felt like it was a way voters could think throughly through votes while the voting here is more just who you thought won. I like this site a lot though. Granted I have only had three debates here so I may be missing something lol!

One thing that seemed off to me about multiple criterion voting was that the point values are kind of arbitrary. Why are sources worth 2/3 of arguments, for example? And if one side used sources better but the other side used logic better or something to have better arguments, why are sources worth extra points but not the logic? If the goal of a debate is just to win on arguments, that seems simpler to me.

Granted, people could be biased when evaluating arguments. Which is why UltraRated votes have stricter standards. But the issue always seemed to me "the points for arguments need to be impartial" rather than "people also need to give points for other things which aren't the primary goal of the debate."

To be fair as well I haven’t done every debate type lol! I do actually think that is a fair point with the logic bit. Some people can win based on flow. Well I’ve at least seen in live debates. How does ultrated work? Is that like set voters voting on something? That does seem like a good idea as well. I’ve only debated like 5 times on dart and I’ve only had 3 here. So my evaluation isn’t perfect. I guess I want to try each voting system out in my debates.

How does ultrated work?

Random topics; random sides; random opponents; random voters. If you go to your profile > badges > take quiz to be able to earn voting badges you will see the rubric for UltraRated votes. It basically requires you to address all major arguments made in the debate and also has guidelines for frameworks to make sure that participants know how arguments will be evaluated.

Dang that sounds interesting. I’m going to have to read one before I participate lol! It’s an interesting concept for sure.
