I think the like button is kinda… bad. Like when I look at my posts and someone liked it, it gives me a buzz, which I think is fucking stupid lol. I think this feature should either be removed or there should at least be an option to make the likes and the button invisible.
I mean, the like button is currently the only reward system in place in the forum. Not all people like likes, but for those who do, it is a bit of a driving force. It probably wouldnt make much difference if removed and replaced by some other reward system, but I mean, whatever. We are still waiting for a lot of things on this site which so far arent happening. Free speech is nice, but its not like its enough on its own.
I see your point, although it's kind of harmless in my opinion compared to other systems. Dislikes and sorting by likes both discourage dissent, but luckily we don't do either of those. LessWrong has dual voting systems—one for quality of the post, and another for agreement/disagreement, which is a good way to make valuable but controversial comments still get seen. Here I'm not sure that system would make a difference though since comments are sorted in chronological order.
As it stands, likes may be a popularity contest to some extent, but they give the people who care about likes the bare minimum they want in a forum while also not doing much to create a hive mind.
This could always be a topic for the next survey. Also, saw that your post got 2 likes and it took me a minute to notice the irony.

I agree with this. I think it also applies some very soft but non zero pressure against engagement. If I see a take I really agree with I’ll just smash that mf like button instead of like the old days quoting and saying “this” or even better saying “I agree” then augmenting for some reason

Maybe balance it out with a "Don't Like" button too.
The button I really wish we had would be a "F--k You" button, there are a lot of posts and posters that we need that button for.
