Heavy rain and severe 

flooding are currently affecting multiple states in Peninsular Malaysia, displacing thousands of people. The situation is primarily caused by the annual Northeast Monsoon, which has been exacerbated by tropical storm systems. 

Current Situation and Affected Areas

  1. Mass Evacuations: Thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate their homes and are currently staying in temporary relief centers across the country.
  2. Widespread Impact: States affected include Kelantan, Terengganu, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Perlis, Kedah, Perak, and Johor.
  3. Worst-Hit Regions: While the east coast states (Kelantan, Terengganu) are typically more prone to flooding during monsoon season, recent downpours severely impacted western states, including Selangor, Malaysia's wealthiest and most populous region surrounding the capital Kuala Lumpur.
  4. Infrastructure Disruption: Flooding has led to road closures, disrupted public transport, and submerged homes, with water levels reaching waist-high or higher in some areas.
  5. Casualties: At least two deaths in Malaysia have been attributed to the recent severe weather and flooding. 

Causes

The flooding is driven by several factors:

  1. Annual Monsoon: The primary cause is the annual Northeast Monsoon season, which runs from October/November to March and brings heavy rainfall to the region, particularly the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, west of Sarawak, and east of Sabah.
  2. Tropical Storms: The recent severe weather has been intensified by tropical storm systems, such as Tropical Storm Senyar, which brought unusually heavy and continuous rainfall to the region.
  3. Climate Change: Broader climate change effects are seen as exacerbating natural disasters across Asia, leading to more intense and frequent weather events. 

Response

Malaysian authorities, including the police, army, and fire departments, have mobilized over 66,000 personnel nationwide to assist with rescue operations and manage the 493 temporary evacuation centers established to shelter victims. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) continues to issue weather warnings and advisories.
