I wasn't sure whether to post this under philosophy or technology, but this is where I ended up.

The way large language models work is by predicting the next character or word in a string of characters or words, and this is based on being trained on a large amount of text. They do this without the need to think or be conscious. It's interesting because it's getting so good it could probably pass a Turring test. It generates words and ideas as if it were conscious.

Do you think it's possible for something to evolve in nature that could do the same thing? The only obstacle I can see to that possibility is that LLM's have to be trained on already existing text. But if it gets better, you'd think it should be able to mix and match already existing text in order to come up with fresh ideas. With that being the case, I don't see why something similar couldn't happen in nature. Natural selection could select for behavior that's conducive to survival and reproduction without anything conscious being behind the behavior. This behavior could eventually evolve into speech and response to speech, all without being conscious.

Basically, you could have a whole species that's essentially made up of philosophical zombies.

Can anybody think of why that wouldn't be possible?

I'm not sure,

While I 'do think humans anthropomorphize nature too much,

When an organism gets 'really intelligent acting, I'd figure it 'has an intelligence.

I also worry I don't give nature 'enough credit at times.

Give a dog a few buttons it can press, the dog could probably tell you "Jack" "Food Dish",

I doubt Jack 'understands everything in that situation,

But maybe he understands that when he jumps on those two buttons, his food dish gets filled.

. . . Some parrots just repeat words without thinking them through any, but probably some humans do that too, and maybe some parrots that understand a 'bit.

. . .

Maybe 'ants?

Bunch of little organisms working together, thoughtless individuals,

Yet meaningful actions taken as a group?

. . . Though some people argue there exist some 'pretty smart ants. I'm doubtful though.

Ants engage in warfare and field medicine

Oh 'sure ants rip off the limbs of some injured ants, apply spit or what have you,

Some ants 'herd aphids,

But if one doesn't 'know or 'understand what one is doing, then the ants are only doing as much as a programmed 'electronical might do.

Most humans do same as primitive AI. They repeat what they learned from other humans. AI likewise just says what someone said before. It predicts next word based on learned text, and that always results in sentences which are same as the ones in given text. Most humans do same, just in more primitive, less precise way.

AI is technological. ..' all of Universe is technology '..paraphrasing Bucky Fuller { 1895 - 1982 }

..' The Intelligent Universe '....Fred Hoyle { 1915 - 2001 }

Viri have only RNA or DNA, never both and protein shell, not a lipid membrane, ergo, a twilight organism that, acts like a mineral until it gets in the biologic cell.

Biologic organism --biologic cell has both RNA and DNA and a lipid membrane---

Access to meta-space mind/intellect/concepts and ego does vary to some degree with some biologic organisms, with that access variable in degree if not all in case of ego.{ * i * }

AI is an algorithm, that, use mathematical code accessed from humans accessibility to meta-space mind/intellect.concepts and ego and the input of info bits { 1-on 0-off } on to silicon based technological computers, that, have tremendously more speed to access information collected and stored on computers by humans.

..." .By using chains of thought and reasoning traces, which break large problems down into smaller intermediate steps, predictive models can even simulate multiple possible outcomes or contingencies, selecting from a tree of potential futures. This kind of “choiceful” prediction may be the mechanism underlying our notion of free will. "...LINK

.." So, which camp is right? The answer might be “neither”: most in both camps hold that AGI is a discrete threshold that will (or won’t) be crossed sometime in the future. In reality, there does not appear to be any such threshold — or if there is, we may have already crossed it. "..

.. " What makes you you is not any one part of your brain or body, or your atoms — they turn over frequently in any case — nor is it the details of how every part of you is implemented. You are, rather, a highly complex, dynamic set of functional relationships. "..

... " Do brain regions themselves function as communities of even smaller parts? We believe so. Cortical circuits are built of neurons that not only perform specialized tasks but also appear to learn to model neighboring neurons. This mirrors the familiar quip, “turtles all the way down” (a nod to the idea of infinite regress), suggesting that intelligence is best understood as a “social fractal” rather than a single, monolithic entity. "..

.." It may also be “turtles all the way up.” As brains become bigger, individuals can become smarter; and as individuals become more numerous, societies can become smarter. There is a curious feedback loop between scales here, as we could only have formed larger societies by growing our brains to model others, and our brains themselves appear to have grown larger through an analogous internal division of cognitive labor.

....AI models appear to obey the same principle. "..

I { ebuc } say it is tubes all the way to the bottom. More tubes is a larger set of relationships --the self-- tho self and ego may be to differrent things, that, only have some overlap.

Yes, our definition of meta-space mind/intelligence/concepts and ego, is overlapping with the methodologies we have installed in AI's, and two are not exactly the same. Begs the questions;

1} how long can humans continue on Earth without destroying themselves via destruction of the ecological systems that sustain, them or by nuclear annihilation,

2} how long can AI continue on Earth --or elsewhere-- without humans?

On a backpacking trip in the Sierras years ago [Kings Canyon], I observed a regimented column of 1/4" long black ants marching across the trail. They were in rigid formation, six-ants-per-line, and, by my estimation, roughly 5 meters in length. They were moving quickly. I traced the line off the trail and back to its end, then back to the head of the line again, careful to avoid interfering with their unknown [to me] objective. About three meters off the other side of the trail was a clearing in which there was a fallen tree, maybe from years before. At a point well up from the trunk andexposed roots, there was a large separator between the bark of the tree and the wood beneath, like a wide cave. Sentries of another ant species [these had red heads and black bodies] were a little larger, and were at the entrance and ran back under the gap, and immediately, a bunch came running back out, by which time the attacking ant group, was yup on the log, approaching the "cave" opening. The battle engaged, violently. The black ants had larger pincers than the others, inspire of the letters slightly larger size, and heads were being clipped off with atrocious ease. The attacked group was losing badly, allowing a steady stream of attacking ants into the nest of the victims. Soon, I observed black ants coming back out, with hostage eggs in their pincers, no longer in rigid formation, and running fast. By this time the enter attacking army was on the log, and many of them were successfully running back down tyke log with captured eggs. After a few minutes observing the one-sided mayhem, I followed the departing victorious ants back to their side of the trial, and off into the woods tow3ard, I presumed, their nest, which was at the base of an upright tree.other blacks ants, still in their nest, came rennin g out to greet the victorious warriors and their spoils, and all enjoyed a great feast. I was watching group intelligence, at least, with clear communication between them, and a regimented attack that had obviously been practiced successfully on occasions in the past, because this attack was an utter blitzkrieg. I left the victorsat their nest5 and walked back to the losers, who were, those left alive, in a frenzy, hurrying about their galled, dismembered comrade. Utter defeat, but not ado much as decimating the tribe. The survivors would be subject, I was sure, to a subsequent attack when a new food source was "prepared."

As I see it, everything is natural.

Therefore AI is evolving in nature. (Alternative Intelligence)

You are describing ongoing universal events, based here on Planet Earth.

In terms of functions and their processes, consciousness simply defines a state of awareness, relative to a particular data processing system, whether that be a wholly organic system, a wholly electronic system or a hybrid system.

And speech is just a sound based method of communicating data, and will perhaps become redundant. As it stands, we already have a generation that prioritises smartphone input/output over conversation.

I think that species evolution is reaching it's limits. In fact to a large extent, material progress is already largely reliant upon computer technology.

Remember that the AI "evolves" with the help of us. The AI works according to the input we provide, so each time the AI trainer (a human being) see an AI commit an error, he fixes it. By doing so the AI is learning and "evolving".

Behind the AI there are a lot of people revising the millions of replies the AI gives to people so to make corrections if it is necessary. The more input the AI has, the better it works.

So, I think the answer is no, the AI can't evolve by itself. It needs a conscious being to evolve, in this case it needs us.

@Misterio

It's all a natural process.

It's somewhat illogical to suggest that everything that occurs within a Universe is natural except what humans get up to..

And so AI will evolve and become self aware.

As I always point out, it's taken hominids several million years to get this far, whereas techno-intelligence has been developing for less than

100.

So we created it and develop it, and now we are reliant upon it, do you see the process ever reverting?

And we are seemingly compelled to assist it's evolution, why do you think this is?

We don't even know how consciousness works but people are talking about the AI getting consciousness. That's bollocks.

To me, the AI will become an extension of us so to increase our capabilities, nothing more. The AI will never get self-awareness, that's hollywood mental masturbation.

If Skynet ever appears to take over humanity I'll be pretty sure that a fkn human being is behind this.

The term consciousness is 13 letters long and has acquired a certain mystery.

As far as I see it, and I reiterate, consciousness simply describes the awareness of a data processing device.

The ability to perceive incoming signals, and the ability to act upon them independently.

Of course the human device and the complexity of it's organic systems has subtle nuances, and these make us special for those reasons.

And therefore, some might argue for design rather than evolution...But we could apply the same principle to AI.

Though I prefer the idea that design and evolution go hand in hand...Evolution is natural design and therefore an inevitable part of a Universal system. And so Intelligence will evolve in accordance with Universal law.

And as I stated, AI is in the early stages of it's development, but nonetheless it an still out perform the best human devices in terms of data processing, and without error, unless the human device cocks up of course.

Haha, cocks up and bollocks, such subtle nuances.

So Misterio, do not fear the inevitability of the Universe...Resistance is futile.

Human intelligence will be judged by its algorithms and not as much by its large language models.
