“If Mamdani would like me, a white New Yorker who never owned slaves, to pay a black New Yorker who never was a slave, then I propose: Every Muslim in NYC starting with Mamdani, should pay us for 9/11.”

I was told maybe I should make more click baity threads.

Mamdani has already done way more damage to his city than the twin towers. Nobody can pay back that much.

Black Slaves were not paid reparation, that is a fact and a stain American history. America sought revenge for 9/11 and fought several wars for the last twenty years and appears to have been unsuccessful there as well. Americans should learn to admit defeat when it happens instead of dragging wars that produce no victories..

Reparations, in the case of modern compensation by the US for its history of slavery is unconstitutional. See Article I, section 9, clause 3: "No Bill of Attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed." Look up the meaning of "ex post facto law." Slavery, in the eighteenth century, was not illegal, and did not become so in the U.S. until the passage of the 13A in 1865. So the demand, and the payment of reparations for that purpose, is now illegal.

However, it is also illegal to expect all Muslims to pay for reparations for 9/11 since not all Muslims are responsible for the destruction caused on 9/11 by a few of them. Those few, only, are responsible, and over the ensuing 25 years, the US has officially been engaged in bringing those responsible to justice.

There is no stain. See my post #9. Some have sought to amend the Constitution to alter the wording of Article I, but, to date, those efforts have failed, and should. Like it or not, in the eighteenth century, slavery was not illegal. Immoral, yes, but civilization is not driven by morality alone, given our wide variation of what constitutes morality.

There's much more than 100 years of observation of the ideas of socialism/communism. These ideas have been around since Eden. They don't work, period. Since 1848, specifically [Marxism], it has never lasted more than a human lifetime, and I predict it never will.

Slave owners were compensated for giving up their slaves, but the sales did not receive reparation.

Unearned wealth is one of the most toxic of human creations. No matter what form it takes. It strips the soul of gratitude and wonder and purpose, making happiness eternally unachievable.

I always thought that black people should get reparations. Even after slavery ended, they were pretty much pushed in poor areas and under bad circumstances.

For this, I recommend reading two short books:

Native Son
and
Black Boy

They are both by Richard Wright. They are probably one of most amazing books I ever read on systematic racism.

As for Muslims paying reparations for 9/11, well, surely USA must first pay reparations to Vietnam and about 70 other countries it invaded in past 70 years.

This. There is no comparison between the two.

What kind of reparations are we talking about? Lump sum cash that goes to all black people just regardless of how much they individually were affected by slavery or systemic racism? I think the way reparations are typically framed is way too broad, and I don't think lump-sum handouts really have a great track record. If racial disparities continue, do we just keep giving lump-sum handouts?

Not to mention there's an opportunity cost here. The money could go to better schools in poor neighborhoods or better healthcare. Those are the systemic issues that seem the most pressing currently and probably contribute to racial disparities.

Systemic economic reforms that focus on universal uplift, criminal justice reform, sentencing guidelines reforms, abolition of private jails, and yes, single payer/Medicare for all healthcare, and better (more equitable, more consistent, and just... more) funding for public education. That would be a decent start. 😉

As for Muslims? They havent collectively wronged the US and have no legacy of oppression against any specific group of Americans. 9/11 was terrorists which is not synonymous with Muslims.

If there is any chance of money in it, then people will drag up the past.

Which is why I am after (the Romans, the Danes, the Angles, the Normans, the Saxons, the Jutes and any other f**ker who has come across the English channel in the last 2000 years without an invite), for compensation...Especially f**king Christians.

I would support that, although I don't think it's what people typically mean when they advocate reparations. I'm down to just do effective governance and call it reparations though.

Lump sums of cash is not going to fix the problem. It is a band-aid to fix cancer. Real reparations need to address the ongoing issues.

I agree with that. Also think it would be pretty difficult to identify who was affected by slavery on an individual level but significantly easier to identify effective reforms.

The blacks were disadvantaged as slaves and continue to be economically disadvantaged ecause if their slow start. Reparation was designed to address that issue but were never granted to black slaves.

You're going to have to define what you mean by "healthcare" since some on the left claim gender choice is healthcare. If gender choice is healthcare, so is hair color choice, and fingernail polish choice. Maybe even clothing choice is healthcare. That's how absurd this word-baiting is becoming. Woke 2.0

What is gender choice? As I understand it, gender identity is a core part of who a person is. It might be recognized, but not chosen. Are you opposed to gender-affirming care?

Healthcare: efforts made to maintain, restore, or promote someone's physical, mental, or emotional well-being especially when performed by trained and licensed professionals

They Inherited the Caribbean Islands...Are they never satisfied...Wasn't it worth the effort?

Not forgetting that rather a lot of "blacks" were rounded up and sold into slavery by other "blacks".

So a few smart whiteys provided the transport and the jobs.

Whilst dumb whitey stayed at home and slaved too.

And all around the world people have enslaved other people for millennia.

Yet the only slavery worth remembering is a couple of hundred years or so in the latter half of the second millennium AD.

Well, potentially lucrative slavery worth remembering.

So why don't they all go back home to Africa...Perhaps we can pay their airfares...Inclusive of in flight meals.

And why do todays Africans keep risking their necks trying to cross the English Channel in rubber dinghy's to get away from the place.

Human beings are fantastic.
