Vivek Ramaswamy made an ad that featured a video of Amy Acton's estranged mother shittalking her daughter. Acton is estranged from her birth mother because her mother defended and remained married to Amy's stepfather after he was accused of raping her as a child. As this man was formerly accused and prosecuted for the incest/rape of another daughter from a previous marriage, this was a very credible accusation. It's possibly the most spectacular political self-immolation of my lifetime, and it comes from a candidate who's already squandered a considerable lead through unforced errors and general sliminess.
It reminds me of why the anointment of Kamala Harris was such a bad idea: an open and fair, competitive primary is a test by fire and proves that your candidate can handle the basic tasks of a political campaign and survive under pressure. Combined with Ramaswamy's Christmas Crashout (wherein he impotently seethed at Americans having sleepovers) and other awkward, alienating moments on the campaign trail which have seen his support dwindle even in a Republican stronghold, Vivek is the textbook case of a personally weak candidate who was shoehorned through what should have been an open primary field. It's a cautionary tale to both political parties about the importance of testing your candidates before it's too late.
