Much as I find Kimmel unfunny and disagree strongly with Sidewalker here, I don't like that the FCC is being weaponized to threaten a network over what a comedian said.

I thought FCC is there to regulate the content in television.

But, well, I don't know. Maybe it's different in the States.

Everyone knows you are supposed to kill Hitler so yes the media and leftwing politicians continually calling center of the road Republicans like Kirk Hitler is an attempt to get whack jobs to do stupid shit.

No prominent figure on the left called Charlie Kirk "Hitler", this is a lie being perpetuated as an excuse to justify the horrendous anti-constitutional amoral things the right is about to engage in, and it was predictable. See the thread I made the morning after.

What many on the left have done is called Trump and those in lock step with him fascists, because they are. That's a fact, and I would be more than happy to debate that.

But that's where the lie comes in, because the best lies are always based on a nugget of truth. Hitler was a fascist, and is a useful reference for explaining to people why fascism is bad. But none of that means fascism = Hitler. This is where nuance comes in, but on the right it's more useful to pretend it doesn't exist, and anyone arguing one is necessarily talking about the other. That's how prapoganda works.

What I do find interesting here, are those who stop short of saying the left called them Hitler, and stick to the actual truth; that the left called them fascists. These people are telling on themselves. The idea here is that fascists are so bad, that someone would be reasonable in thinking they have to kill them. Well if you believe that, then why do you support a fascist movement?

It's called stochastic terrorism and the left are masters at it.

Funny how the right suddenly now understands this term. I'm old enough to remember when Trump stood on a stage in front of thousands of supporters and told the crowd that there would be nothing they could do to stop Hilary Clinton, except "maybe the 2nd amendment people there's something they can".

That was just one of many examples we've gripped about over the years, including the most prominent; January 6th. The defense of Trump then was that Trump couldn't possibly be responsible because these were just wackos who had agency and therefore Trump couldn't be responsible for their actions. But now, all of a sudden, when one deranged gunman does something stupid the entire left wing of the country is responsible.

They need a new word, hypocrisy doesn't even register anymore.

Yeah but I'm against it being used to support a political party, regardless of which party is doing it.

CNN is cable, the FCC doesn't have jurisdiction.

You just get more and more detached from reality, your alternative facts are just wrong pumpkin'

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) oversees interstate and international communications through cable, radio, television, satellite, and wire.

The FCC regulates cable, try again.

FCC doesn't regulate cable content, so Trump can scream all he wants if Kimmel joins CNN.

The role of the FCC is changing in the US, historically, the FCC had limited authority to regulate content because of the First Amendment protections of free speech, FCC authority was limited to restricting obscene or indecent content in television and radio broadcasting.

This has changed as the American people have opted for Fascism, First Amendment protections have been reduced or eliminated and the FCC's role has become weaponized in the hands of the authoritarian leader who has totalitarian control to use the FCC as a tool for silencing critics, subjugating the people, and punishing the authoritarian leader's opposition.

I do, but what you saw is I like the Lincoln Project, that's an organization of Conservatives fighting against Trump for the soul of the Republican party.

Nope, that's just inane BS you made up.

You guys had riots in Baltimore where 4 soldiers and a bunch of civilians were killed by a violent mob in 1861, and Lincoln put Francis Howard and john Wallis in jail, both editors of papers calling Lincoln and his supporters the equivalent of Nazi and Fascist (they called him a tyrant). That's your history.

Obviously, you are the one trolling, you just aren't very good at it. Do you really think we care what America's hat thinks of Lincoln?

I suppose I'm supposed to respond with something derogatory about a great Canadian leader, but since there aren't any, I can't.

How about this:

Question: What's the difference between Sidewalker and the Stanley Cup?

Answer: In the last thirty years, I've been to Canada.

FCC doesn't regulate cable content, so Trump can scream all he wants if Kimmel joins CNN.

Oh pulease, you really don't know what you are talking about, in the hands of an authoritarian ruler who doesn’t give a shit about the first amendment, the FCC is a powerful weapon for silencing critics.

You are trying to split hairs to justify Trump’s authoritarianism by characterizing his authoritarianism as controlled and subordinate to regulatory conditions of federal agencies, that is nonsense, Trump has added the FCC to his weapons arsenal and can use it any way he wants. Your insistence that the FCC doesn’t regulate cable is hopelessly uninformed, first, the FCC must approve cable network mergers and acquisitions, which is always happening in that business. The FCC also has full regulatory power over the cable content we get to see, which means yes, "Trump can scream all he wants"...OR...what is more likely, as he did with Kimmel, he can simply threaten the networks existence, he can simply take CNN off the air so viewers can’t see it.

CNN doesn’t send its content directly to the viewer, they send it to the local networks and cable providers, and the local provider sends it to the viewers, The FCC regulates the local cable providers, if Trump tells them if to pull Jimmie Kimmel off the air or he will revoke their license and pull them off the air, they have no choice but to comply, and threatening to abuse power is exactly how he got both Kimmel and Colbert off the air.

You can try to justify Trumps actions all you want, but don't try to tell us not to worry because Trump can't do shit, you know damn well an authoritarian ruler can do whatever he wants, and in the wrong hands, a weaponized FCC gives the ruler complete power to decide what content the cable network gets to broadcast.

You can pretend to justify it all you want, we both know that Trump is taking control of the media and eliminating free speech, your comical lies about regulatory guard rails are just a distraction, Trump will do what he wants.

Why are you so obsessed with the word "woke"?

The next time you see the word woke, try to take deep breaths and slowly count to ten, maybe that will calm you down.

Justify what actions? You are talking about an action Trump hasn't yet done... When Trump starts jailing journoulists like Lincoln did, you can come back here and complain. Until then, you should adjust your tinfoil hat a bit.

On the Kimmel thing, most of these late-night shows are dying because their audience is literally dying. There's a reason that they're seen as passe, stale, and unentertaining - the only people still watching them are entering the twilight of their lives, and the show caters to whatever audience still has cable in 2025. Humor is evolving at a whiplash pace, with memes going through ten permutations online before Kimmel can wrap is mind around the first. The world has moved on.

On that shooting thing - are we really still pretending that Israel didn't have at least something to do with it?

Yeah, I read something about their key demographic (18-49?) was around 150,000 at the time of the Trump FCC threat.

Most popular YouTubers like Rogan (which I assume FCC also has no control over) get at least 5 times that much with next to no production costs! Few people over 49 will surf alternative media, so when 2 million people watch a video a day, that's serious competition.
