Here are some survey results about how scientists report voting or political preferences, especially toward Donald Trump. The numbers vary depending on how “scientist” is defined and which survey is being asked. ([GenomeWeb][1])

## Key findings

* A **2020 Nature** survey of ~900 of its readers (many scientists) found about **8%** supported Trump, while **86%** favored Joe Biden. ([GenomeWeb][1])
* A survey by the Union of Concerned Scientists Scientific Network (UCSSN) found that in the 2016 election, **89%** of those scientists surveyed voted for Hillary Clinton, and only **1%** voted for Trump. ([Scientific American][2])
* More recently, a Nature-poll of about 2,000 scientists showed only **6%** support for Trump, with 86% favoring Kamala Harris (in the context of the 2024 election). ([Science Times][3])
---

## Rough summary

Putting it all together, a fair estimate is that **somewhere around 5-10%** of scientists surveyed in recent U.S. polls say they would vote for or support Donald Trump, with a much larger fraction supporting Democratic candidates, at least in the surveys publicly reported.

---

It’s hard to say precisely, but according to a 2024 survey of U.S. college faculty, only 8 percent said they planned to vote for Donald Trump. (Inside Higher Ed)

Trump's administration has slashed research funding and halted broad swathes of federally funded science, under a government-wide cost-cutting ...Scientist and educators are against Trump’s cuts to federal budget.

Easy Schmeezy to understand why.

Trump is a science denier, he has cut funding for scientific research, he is anti-intellectual (loves the poorly educated), he's attacking universities, putting politics ahead of science during the COVID epidemic caused the unnecessary deaths of a million Americans, climate change denial stand to kill many more, and science and university professors are educated enough to recognize and oppose fascism.

Academia is probably always going to lean left to a large extent because politics is mostly a pre rational inclination based on personality types. And the bookish, nebbish, lawyery personality types who do well in academia correlate strongly with leftist orientation

there’s definitely political discrimination against conservative would be professors but that isn’t close to explaining everything. You’d have to really work to get a conservative leaning faculty and even then you’d probably be compromising on quality a lot

also in the era of Trump people educated people have been alienated from the right wing more and more. Idk how much I can blame scientists for being anti Trump when he cut so much research funding…yes a lot of it was for BS but much of it wasn’t. Or doctors who lived through Covid having an instinctual disgust toward right wing politics when they had to witness tons of people needlessly die because of insane anti vax conspiracies that were almost exclusively from one side. And an anti vaxxer now at the head of HHS….

Those who have to ask are clueless/ignorant/head-n-armpit, and/or deniers of 95% of scientific truths and facts.

These utlra-republican-right want to take humanity to the good ole days, ---much further than 1990-- of when men were men and women were women. I think this was back before women had the right to vote. And to get that right was a bloody mess for them.

As was the right for ending racism in USA was a bloody mess for blacks.

As it is to whatever degree, for those who the ultra-republican-right dont consider as Trumpets recent comments on the Michigan Mormon church,...yet another attack on good Christians..... Oh he loves to wave the Bible beat his hollow heart drum of Christianity to infer bove all others who is good and others, not so much.

Unless they have money and ultra-republican-right. I remmber before Regan got in as president, hearing people state then, that USA was going to go so far to the right, USA citizens would not recognize the USA.

Well that time is rapidly occurring upon us. How long before the King maker ultra-republican-right Elon comes back on center stage?

One thing I'd add to this is that there's a standard leftist pathology which idolizes youth and being "bright".

There's a lot of pretty well known stereotypes about the '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, and '90s, but if in hindsight we have the collective self-awareness to articulate a stereotype about the last 25 years, it's that internet influencers of the time period all tried for the same basic persona. It's a way of acting I have seen countless times from countless different faces, best embodied in the "Vlog Brothers" (don't know if they still call themselves that lol).

If I were to try to describe it in one sentence, it's a sort of superficial witticism and book-smartness which to the left signals that this person isn't an old, close-minded (re: conservative) square. This is something that's taken to be the exclusive domain of the young because the young are the perennial friends and vanguard of the revolution, because their generation is uniquely bright enough to recognize capitalism = bad, billionaires = greedy, and dekulakization = good.

Whoops, I've gone off on a tangent. Anyway, these are the cultural values engrained in leftists from youth. Instead of asking "How do I make good money" or "What contributions of material value can I make to the world through my labor", they ask "I'm smart, so what smart person career do I belong in?". As a result, leftists go disproportionately for careers in academia, since it's the archetypal smart person job. When the institutions become left-dominated this fact reinforces itself, yes, but I think even if you solved the problem in the short term it'd just happen again later because the left will always be the camp sending its people to colonize this sphere of authority.

Now Trump shut the government down. Is he hoping his golf game gets better?

Yeah leftists are definitely fixated on status, approval from authority, feeling superior to others in visible ways, etc. That’s why it would be so hard to have an academia that isn’t at least somewhat leftist in orientation. They LIKE the school environment!

That is why Americans drive o the right side to counter leftist orientation.

Because the academy has been taken over by the fkn lefties since long ago.

It's no surprise, actually. Gramsci, a theorist of marxism, proposed to take over the cultural institutions (media and education) so to subvert the cultural hegemony over society. In this sense, the socialists abandoned the war of classes for a more subtle way to get the power, through universities, schools, and any institution where they can brainwash people with their fkn ideology.

Russians knew about it very well and they used it against the yankees.

Trump needs Canada to correct leftist orientation in America.

At the federal level, Canada has been dominated by two relatively centrist parties practising "brokerage politics", the centre-left leaning Liberal Party of Canada and the centre-right leaning Conservative Party of Canada (or its predecessors).

There might be some plausibility that it's not so much that objective carrers are leftist but that leftists infiltrate objective careers

But the idea behind the arguments that these esteemed members of society can't be trusted to be objective is kinda ridiculous

Yes there are institutional biases but these guys are our most objective thinkers and their political positions should tell us something especially when its so overwhelming against a guy like trump

The more educated you are, the more likely you are to recognize the absurdity and danger this president represents. Not sure why you find that puzzling, that's what follows when you have a downright moron running the country.

If you've never seen the movie Idiocracy take 2 or so hours and you'll see what this country looks like right now to those who know better.
