there is this common mistaken belief that people learn from mistakes.

But that isnt true even one bit.

People only learn that they made a mistake. they dont learn from that mistake in any useful sense of that word.

Best proof for this is that no matter how many mistakes people make, they always keep making more mistakes.

take American voters for example. After each elections, they seem to be perfectly aware that they made a mistake. But then later on next elections, they make even worse mistake.

If you keep making mistakes always, you are not learning anything.

to learn means to avoid making a mistake.

However, humans have this amazing ability that just when they learn to avoid one mistake, at same time they somehow also make an entirely new mistake after.

So humans dont learn, for this reason:

P1. Human brain capacity is limited

P2. If brain capacity is full, learning one thing always leads to forgetting another

P3. Human brain capacity is full

C. For each thing person learns, person forgets another thing.

C basically guarantees that each time person learns from mistake, person will also forget some other knowledge, and as a result, make an entirely new mistake.

there is no way to argue against this, because P1 is truism, P2 is truism, and P3 is true because humans arent capable to even memorize long term what they know now.

People keep forgetting things, because modern way of life is such designed that person is constantly taking in more knowledge than they can remember.

this creates a modern, forgetful person. World where average person thinks they are law abiding citizens while average person at the same time commits 3 crimes per day at least.

And before someone responds with "human brain capacity expands", that is irrelevant even if true, but its questionable even how true is it. You can expand a water bottle. It will still spill over once full, and we already know human brain capacity is full because humans forget majority of things they learn. It would take a significant expansion to prevent forgetting, but such expansion doesnt happen.

Best example of "learned one, forgot another" are educated women who, it seems, the more educated they are, the less likely are they to be successful mothers or have any decent life. Japan who has among highest educated population in world with among highest number of school days per year, at the same time faces complete failure of basic social life, which is worse than in almost any uneducated population.

So yes, too much education causes a quick spill over effect.

And once knowledge begins spilling over, any new learned thing causes a forget of something else. Person prospers in one area only to fail in another.

What hope is there for humanity if humans don’t learn from their mistakes. It makes AI almost indispensable.

People don't learn that they made a mistake. They learn from the mistake. If people learned that they made mistakes, they would choose the alternative path of not making mistakes, but people continue to make mistakes and have to learn from each instance of incorrection.

Yes that is true.

We can only attribute mistakenness once mistakenness becomes attributable.

Though possible mistakenness is open to interpretation.

Admitting you made a mistake is the hardest part.

So.

I go for a ride on my bike on Monday and return home safely.

I go for a ride on Tuesday and get knocked off and killed.

Wherein lay the mistake?

Going for a ride on Tuesday. You should have skipped the bike ride on Tuesday.

@Debby

Exactly, though how would I have known that Tuesdays ride was a mistake?

@SergeantLynch

You check for road and traffic conditions before going on the ride.

I was knocked of my bike by a falling piano.

Hard to avoid a falling piano. Was the piano in working condition? The impact would be less serious.

No, but it required retuning.

@SergeantLynch

So it is ready to fall again.

You never know when a piano is going to land on your head.

Unless some one is playing Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor on the way down.

Those listening would be less inclined to move out of the way. Do you remember what was playing before the piano struck you?

@Debby

John Cage's 4' 33''.

Now you can play it without getting struck.More enjoyable this way.
