Almost all of these positions are either right wing caricatures of the left, or positions that people only disagree with until they learn what they actually are.

Voter ID is a perfect example. Right wingers love to phrase this as "should a person need to show ID to vote" failing to take into account that the person already provided their ID when they registered. Not to mention that right wingers love to have this debate in the abstract because once we take reality into account it shows that the laws republicans are actually trying to pass would effectively disenfranchise way way more voters than it would deter from virtually non-existent voter fraud.

This is the problem with a political movement that isn't built on any coherent political philosophy or ideology. All you guys can do is caricature the other side and attack you're fantasy demons, cause you have nothing else.

In California, undocumented residents can legally get a driver’s license. That should not be disputed by either partisan side. Those licenses are supposed to be separated from voter registration systems, so they are not automatically registered to vote.

But when it comes to voter registration itself, the system does not require someone to prove citizenship at the moment they register. Instead, it relies on the person checking a box and affirming, under penalty of perjury, that they are a U.S. citizen.

So the real issue is not that undocumented immigrants are being automatically registered without a picture ID. The issue is that the system depends on self-attestation of citizenship rather than upfront proof. i.e., the system requires no identification of citizenship or verification. So yes, you can register with a CA driver's license as an undocumented citizen and say "yup, I had a picture ID." "System is secure!"
