I think it's true, it aligns with something a whack job unhinged old senile man would do.

I looked into it, and it was reported in several reputable news outlets, beginning with the Wall Street Journal, then CNN and most of the major news outlets including Fox News. JD Vance said Trump likes to buy them all shoes in a speech a while back before the WSJ broke the story, and Trump said "Sneakers are wonderful, but I don’t want my Cabinet members wearing sneakers, so I’ll get them a pair of shoes, it’s a gift from Donald Trump", he also said he thinks it makes them look "spiffy and nice".
