No, reading books does not make anyone smarter. All people read books, yet almost no person is smart. Clearly, such system doesnt work, especially not for old people who think solving crossword makes them smart.

I have written a highly detailed scientific book on how to become smart, with over 500 ways of becoming smarter. Reading books wasnt anywhere on that list. I didnt even consider to place it there, because I know reading books is dumb, unless its a book on how to become smarter, and most books arent.

Brain Training: Do Crosswords Really Make You Smarter?

Absolutely. Crosswords work like a gym for your brain.

They strengthen verbal memory, boost focus, and even slow age-related cognitive decline, according to recent research.

For younger solvers, they sharpen problem-solving and lateral thinking skills essential in school and life.

Becoming "smarter" involves a combination of lifestyle habits and mental exercises that improve cognitive function. Key factors include consistently reading, exercising, and getting enough sleep, along with engaging your brain through activities like learning a new language, playing an instrument, or solving puzzles.Staying curious, asking questions, and practicing critical thinking are also essential for intellectual growth.

Yes, reading books makes you smarter. But it also depends on the books you read.

by boosting brain power, improving memory, expanding vocabulary, enhancing critical thinking, and building new neural pathways, essentially acting as a workout for your mind that strengthens cognitive functions like focus, pattern recognition, and complex problem-solving skills, even at older ages.

How reading boosts intelligence:

  1. Brain Connectivity: Reading creates and strengthens neural networks, improving communication between brain hemispheres, which helps process information faster.
  2. Memory & Focus: It engages your brain, improving focus and strengthening memory by forming new neural connections (synapses).
  3. Knowledge & Vocabulary: Nonfiction expands your factual knowledge, while both fiction and nonfiction introduce new words, boosting verbal skills.
  4. Critical Thinking: Analyzing complex texts encourages deeper thought, interpretation, and problem-solving from different angles.
  5. Cognitive Reserve: Studies show reading habits can slow age-related memory decline, preserving mental sharpness.

To maximize smarts from reading:

  1. Read Actively: Take notes, apply ideas, and think critically about what you're reading.
  2. Set Goals: Choose books that align with specific learning goals to build focused knowledge.
  3. Read Widely: Explore different genres to broaden perspectives and creativity.
