It's not terribly unusual for someone to claim Popular straight up. I get seeing it as sub-optimal town play, but I don't get seeing it as scummy.

Some people just want to verify their roles, I get it. There's as much motivation to do so as scum as there is as town. I'm lost on where the scumread comes in, just as I would be if someone called Banana town based on verifying her role.
7-2 is unfair to scum slightly and 6-3 is unfair to town by a wide margin. I assume that a 1x popular scum helps balance that tension there
7-2 is a very normal distribution for games like this and pretty fair to both sides. I don't see how the 1X Popular helps balance a dynamic that's already balanced.

Wylted’s actually got a small point. Not with his initial reasoning that Banana could’ve saved her role for LYLO, but in that generating behavior around discussion of you makes sense.
Another fact is that because mafia knows you’re popular, that’s one person that they know isn’t a more important PR.
That being said, does Banana know this? She’s gotten quite a few games under her belt now but there’s still quite a few things she probably doesn’t know.
I do know that she tends to be more combative as scum. Her guessing that Wylted is reaction baiting is actually quite towny in my book. Comes from the mind of someone who doesn’t even see how anyone could scumread them. Tends to be a towny bias, especially when they think they have something that should make them widely townread.

The most recent game I can find where Banana played with a Popular player was Game Show mafia. She was scum and it was Luna's game. Moozer was the Popular Townie and was slow to claim even after having been absent for a lot of the DP.
Hadn't gotten back that far, but good to know there was a game where she was Popular.
