That's still a real risk, but the need to modpsych Kohai makes it one that I wouldn't worry about unless your character matches a specific role so well that you can't imagine them being anything else.
I mean, that's precisely where I think the problem could lie, so yes.
It's a calculated risk, and the calculations for this game are different than they are for most games on here. I won't deny that there could be legitimate criticism of it, but calling it "throwing caution to the wind", comes off as having a vested interest against it.
We're talking about a massclaim here in DP1 that you and three other players have already joined. Recognizing the risk and then just plunging ahead regardless seems decidedly incautious.
Plausible, yes, but they could just as well convince themselves of falsehood.
Not something I'd bank on, but sure.
After thinking about it for a while, I'll SOP-claim. My role is called Paranoid. If someone's action visits me, I have a 50:50 chance of (1) killing them and neutralizing their action or (2) redirecting their action to a randomly chosen player. Justification is that Chris Langan is a vocal supporter of guns and conspiracy theories. Check out his banner on XformerlyTwitter for an example.
Yep, that should have been an obvious SOP claim. So you're claiming a coin flip PGO/Nexus. The justification does fit with the character, I'll give you that, but this is really the kind of thing you should have posted first.
And if scum visits me...
Which is balanced by killing a scum being a biggee help than killing a townie hurts, plus I might be visited by only a scum if I am being townread. I should add that I am not convinced that straight PGO should always be SOP-claimed.
So, two things. First, this balance assumes that your PGO would only kill one person. If you're visited during the night by multiple players, wouldn't all of them theoretically be subject to your role, or just the first? My experience with PGOs in the past is that they can and would kill multiple visitors. Second, I don't really get the logic here. Why don't you think that a PGO should always be SOP-claimed? I get that there's value in the role if scum visits you and that you see that value as greater than the loss of town players who also visit you, but if the latter happened and you outed afterward or you had been pushed to claim PGO later, I can practically guarantee you would have been lynched for it.
