I've just never been great at following rules. Forgive me if I miss something in this mix.

Anyway, good to be back at it. I'm still at work, but I'll try to be active this evening.

Since alignments are randomized, I see no reason to lie about our characters. We might as well claim those immediately. I am Christopher Michael Langan.

Side bar note: I must be culturally illiterate as the vast majority of the characters you selected I never heard of befor.e

I guarantee y’all that Kohai based my justification on Langan’s Wikipedia article, especially the first paragraph.

No one will know who my character is so I will shamelessly fangirl.

Carl of the series Dungeon Crawler Carl had recently discovered his girlfriend was cheating on him. Until she got back from her adulterous vacation, he was stuck with her prize-winning cat, which his girlfriend had extravagantly named Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk, Grand Champion Best in Show.

When aliens attacked Earth and forced the survivors into a World Dungeon to compete on a sadistic intergalactic television show, Carl found himself pantsless in a dungeon holding a spoiled cat he never signed on to be responsible for. That is until Donut ate an Enhanced Pet Biscuit he had received as loot. It granted her sentience, the ability to speak, and stats that would go on to make her a powerful mage-class dungeon crawler. She declared herself Grand Champion Best in Dungeon, Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk, and a legendary duo was born!

Seems like a lot of people are getting onboard with claiming early, though I can't say I understand the reasoning here. Yes, characters are effectively randomized, but everyone would have submitted a set of 3 characters for Kohai to choose from. Scum will either have characters that don't obviously link to scummy roles or will just claim one of the other two characters they submitted. Just seems like it doesn't matter, but maybe that's your point. We have 5 claims out now, I'll likely give mine tonight, I just want to understand the thinking here.

There is no strategic reasoning behind my claim, for clarification. It was pure fun. I see no patent advantage to character claiming for town. It hands scum a slight advantage in informing their town role guesses. A more-than-slight advantage if you say things like "I bet you Kohai based my role justification on the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article."

"But how can she talk? She's still a cat!"

"I am right here, you know," Donut said. "It's quite rude to talk about me as if I'm not in the room. And if you must know, Carl, for me, I hear your speech as it should be heard. And you hear mine as that disgusting monkey grunting you call English. This whole translation system is quite elegant, I must admit."

"I'm gonna have to start the tutorial all over," Mordecai said. "She's not a pet anymore. She's now classified as a regular crawler."

"Not necessary. I heard everything you said to my manservant," Donut said. "Now wave your hand and grant me access to my prize boxes so we can get this farce rolling."

"Manservant?" I said.

"He's a little slow," Donut said to Mordecai. "Intelligence of only three. Sad, really. But he's been with the family for a while now, and I just can't see myself letting him go."

Y'all laugh, but I had a Calc 2 midterm where the instructor wrote that we would get extra points for drawing a smiley face at the bottom of the page to prove we read the instructions, and I was the only one who did.

I honestly don't see that much value in the mass claim for town, and while scum can always claim from a very wide pool of characters (not like there's a limit to the range), I do worry about people giving away their role by claiming. And at best, locking scum into a character claim just limits the range of potential roles that can be applicable to their character. I understand throwing caution to the wind in a game like this and just letting people own their characters, I'm just not convinced it's doing anything for us. I'll be looking for some thoughts from those who haven't posted yet.

And speaking as someone who has done exactly that as scum before, yes, I do think it's plausible that scum could work out some roles from character claims.
