The first game I ran was a simple setup on Discord. This is the second game I've run, and some modding will be done through Discord, but it is the antipode of simple.

The Culture series, written by Iain M Banks (1954-2013), consists of nine novels and a novella published from 1987 to 2012. The titular Culture is a post-scarcity anarchic utopia which is widely honored in "who would in a fight" debate communities as the most powerful faction in science fiction without time travel or comic-book-esque reality warping. Although the first published installment is Consider Phlebas (1987) and Look to Windward (2000) is a loose sequel, the books may be read in any order, and I agree with the traditional advice that newcomers should start with The Player of Games (1988).

Incidentally, I have spent the past two months or so building a Werewolf setup based on The Player of Games, but, among other challenges, it would require several times more players than I expect to get on here.

Characters in this game are drawn from different entries in the series. I do not guarantee that every book is represented, nor that the books are close to equally represented. There is sort of a theme split.

Standard rules apply, e.g., no editing or deleting posts, no ciphers or cryptography, no communicating about the game outside the game.

I prefer to do mod communications through Discord, but DebateCraft messages work too. Please make sure I have you added as a friend on Discord. You can message me your friend tag if needed.

I need ten players minimum and have built the setup with ten players in mind, but the more the merrier, and I can rebalance it if I get more than ten players.

Important Mod Notes

  1. Some night actions in this game are dependent on other night actions, so you should treat the night phase as having two 'chunks' and participate during each. Nights are 24 hours by default, but may be extended by 12 hours if needed. Please let me know beforehand if you think you may need a night extension.
  2. There is at least one mechanic which allows a dead player to interact with the game, so there will be no dead chat, and, until the game is over, dead players are forbidden from discussing the game outside of mod chat, faction chats, and the game thread.
  3. All roles will be assigned randomly using random.org. If there are game mechanics which require randomness, random.org will supply it. It should go without saying that roles are assigned randomly, but I might as well say it, if only to set a standard for others.
  4. Scum have been provided with information to help them concoct fake-claims. Also, there are anti-claim mechanics. Claiming your role and/or character may empower scum. Trying to solve the game early may be moderately dangerous.

Forum signatures are bullshit. Nobody wants to waste their time and bandwidth reading something they have read 29,998,559,671,349 times before.

Well, if it takes a while for us to get this together, I'm good with joining. Just need some more time to put together my game. Treat me as a full backup now, I've made some progress.

Genuinely what’s the purpose of anti-claim? Can someone explain this to me?

Edit post

Force us to use methods other than claim analysis to win, presumably

Then why can’t you give scum fake claims?

Not to mention eventually everyone will claim anyways

From what I've seen, forcing everyone to claim to solve the game early can be terrifyingly effective even if scum have decent fake-claims. Anti-claim exists to weaken that meta. I gave scum a weapon specifically against early solves.

Doesn’t that mean the mod is incompetent?

Edit post

I agree. Mods probably want to punish early claiming to keep people on their toes, but fake claims accomplish the same thing imo

Edit post

That said, since I wrote, "Anti-claim mechanics in this game are pervasive, vicious, and may include bastard elements", I've toned it down significantly in favor of information on fake-claims, although plenty of anti-claim is still there. I would edit the OP to reflect this, but I don't seem able to.

I don't think so. More like fake-claiming scum have a hard time concocting fake-claims that fit precisely into the puzzle, even with mod help. That problem gets worse the more complex the game is, and this is not Werewolf 101.

Editing posts is on a timer I think

Fair enough I guess, claiming is a pretty effective strategy for progressing a solve. I just really don't like anticlaim mechanics. I don't feel like I'm getting anywhere without claims progress.

A timer that lets you do it before a certain amount of time has passed or after time has passed? Either way, I can't edit the OP. If I click on the three dots next to the post number, the only option I get is "Mark as Offensive", which is redundant for all my posts anyway.

Before. You can only edit shortly after you post. Once that time has elapsed it's uneditable.

I gave every character their own hidden anti-claim mechanic, and I thought it was creative and cool, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized it was too powerful. Scum still have some other anti-claim tools.

But yeah the recent few games have kind of been chaotic leaning into disastrous imo, so its caused me a bit of burnout as well.

I've been rather stressed myself walking the tightrope between making this setup wildly non-standard and also balanced.
