Figured I'd post this even though I don't plan to launch it until Jan/Feb. Just to get some people down. Feel free to skip me on the list as it's a twelve player game with an experimental concept.
The theme is Ruyi Zhuan, or Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace, a particularly lavish harem drama which explored the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, a golden age during the Qing Dynasty. A sequel to Empresses in the Palace, one of the most acclaimed harem dramas of all time, it follows the life of the 'Erased Empress', a real historical figure about whom relatively little is known, aside from the fact that she came from the Nara clan, became step-Empress, and then cut her hair in defiance of the Emperor, after which he erased her as thoroughly as he could from the artistic and historical record, confining her to her palace for the remainder of her days. The protagonist of the Empresses in the Palace, Niohuru Zhenhuan, serves as the imposing Empress Dowager during this series.
Theme will not be terribly important for playing the game, as the setup will involve the Emperor being aloof and confirmed as town (he will have no vote and will be deathproof, and he will win with the town). The Empress Dowager will be unique character with powerful abilities. All of the other characters will be concubines, who will unlock roles or lose them as they rise and fall in rank, which will be governed by favor - something the emperor will distribute among the concubines during twilight. This makes manipulating the emperor a critical component of victory for both town and mafia. Most roles will be either even or odd to prevent the game from becoming too swingy, with permanent passive roles only being open to two of the ten concubines at the highest ranks. As harem dramas usually involve just about everyone being underhanded and sneaky to sometimes downright evil, there is not really an obvious good/evil split.
