Some stuff I can agree on,
'The American Civil War, or World War 'One.
I sometimes wonder if naming some wars something else would be better.
I also wonder what the highest numbered war is.
"Whitman called it the "Secession War" or preferably the "Union War"—rarely the "Civil War"—confident at least in his public writing that the Union would ultimately survive."

I think I disagree with him on conscription, though I am unsure about people paying to avoid it.
Some people are arguably 'worth more for their money, than their value as a soldier,
Course on another hand, one can make a vested interest or fairness argument.
If a rich influential individual has to serve or have a family member serve in war, and not be able to pay their way out. Might make them more cautious about supporting or forcing other people into war.
"He fervently supported the first national military conscription law passed by the 37th Congress in early 1863, even though he was disappointed that it was not a universal draft (men won exemption either by paying substitutes or by paying three hundred dollars outright)"

"Song of Myself, 51 by Walt Whitman
The past and present wilt—I have fill’d them, emptied them.
And proceed to fill my next fold of the future.
Listener up there! what have you to confide to me?
Look in my face while I snuff the sidle of evening,
(Talk honestly, no one else hears you, and I stay only a minute longer.)
Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)
I concentrate toward them that are nigh, I wait on the door-slab.
Who has done his day’s work? who will soonest be through with his supper?
Who wishes to walk with me?
Will you speak before I am gone? will you prove already too late?"

I think I like the contradiction part in the poem, I think it's often true of people and life, that such often have various contradictions and contesting forces.
