So, uh, we're doing this again. In roughly 2 years we should be back on the moon, this time to establish a permanent human presence. But for now, hopefully we'll get some cool pictures.

Discuss.

Hmmmm.

Moon pictures are sort of boring...Once you've seen a crater you've seen them all.

And we still seem to be forlornly wasting resources doing the same old stuff.

Do you think that fragile organic humans will ever escape this solar system.

I read that the NASA rocket took so long to build, it's already obsolete...

If we could find a way that humans could self sufficiently live on the Moon, perhaps in a crater or underground.

Find some way to mine metal, manufacture, grow food, find water.

Might be useful, though doesn't 'seem the place we'd want a 'colony, too low gravity, too difficult to make a living.

No terraforming it in the near future I'd think, best case I'd figure is people living in sealed buildings of some type.

. . . Though, if we could get some type of robot bodies working, maybe we could work remotely from Earth, Drones, decrease a lot of living requirements 'maybe?

Or have the people on the Moon use the drones.

. . If even 'better AI was created, even fewer humans required.

. . . . . .

But I'm not sure what quality of AI we 'can make now or in 100 years.

I suppose the Moon could be useful as an additional backup, in case anything happened to the Earth?

Then after some type of Earth shattering event, have some colony ships from the Moon come down to repopulate the Earth.

. . . Though I'd figure we could survive well enough squirreling people and knowledge somewhere safe on Earth, Moon seems superfluous.

Lol few years ago it was "we are going to Mars", and now its "oh no we cant even get to the moon anymore". How does someone cant do what people could do 50 years ago?

Getting to the moon, staying there and coming back again is not much easier now than it was previously. Getting to Mars and coming back again is nigh on impossible using current propulsion systems.

Within a minute or two after liftoff, we were treated, once again, to a view of the reality of Earth's shape, a shape obvious at 30,000 feet: an oblate spheroid, not flat. The ancient Greeks knew it, as well, and did not have that view, but established the fact mathematically.

It is said the Artemis 2 mission will take us farther Into space than man has ever gone before. America already owns the record, established with Apollo 13 in 1970; 76 years ago. The record will be broken by 4,000 miles [>6,000 km] by extending our distance from the dark side of the moon further than the slingshot effort of Apollo 13 to get us back to Earth faster than ever before due to its emergency that threatened a crew intended to land on the Moon, but never did. That aspect of the Artemis mission is not an intended record but may be, as well.

Does whizzing around the Moon actually get humans any further into space.

It's a bit like saying that a Redwood tree grows nearer to the Sun than a daffodil does.

You answered your own question with the redwood/daffodil comparison. That is, I suppose, unless a daffodil can root in the top branch of a redwood.

Hmmmmm. Well saying that a Redwood Tree grows nearer to the sun than a daffodil does is the sort of naive answer that makes a horticulturalist smile.

Just like thinking that an extra 4000 miles whizzing around the moon get's us any nearer to outer-space, or any further into our solar system.

Need to get waste disposal technology sorted first.

So what's the next move after Artemis and securing Iranian oil resources?

Perhaps global cooperation would have been better than global competition...Because it's not as if any Nations space flight technology is vastly superior...It's all basically copies of the same technology.

The moon is our new waste disposal dump. We just need more powerful and less polluting rocket fuel to get all of humanities waste to the moon.

So what's the next move after Artemis and securing Iranian oil resources?

Trump failed to end Iranian regimes authority, and,

... come to the rescue of those Iranian peoples trying break free from the authortarian regime, and,

..to take over Iranians petroleum reserves, --as USA did in Venezuela.

Perhaps global cooperation would have been better than global competition...

You mean global war. Putin still attacking Ukraine with Iranian built drones, and,

....Iranians still in control of Strait of Hormuz.

I can recall when computing was a room-size device. Can you?

The toilet wasn't the issue; it was post-deposit processing. That feature is not so important for going to the moon and returning, but is critical for going to Mars, and beyond. That's a drinking water source, and potentially, an energy source as well, you know.

The toilet on the Artemis II mission experienced intermittent issues, including a clogged vent line that prevented proper waste disposal, leading astronauts to use alternative collection methods. Despite these challenges, the toilet remained operational for solid waste but had to rely on backup systems for urine collection.

Yes, a "not so important" essential human process somewhat overlooked, considering that the boffins have had about 50 years to think about it.

As for Mars and beyond, no chance any time soon using current rocket technology...Well, not with humans on board...Well, humans that might want to come home after a while....With or without a new waste disposal and recycling system...Certainly not in our lifetime.

When you actually figure out what it is you think your comments are intended for please share.

Luna { moon } > lunatics > people in 1800's who dreamed going to the moon. Now its dreams of moon base station.

Humanity is going ass backwards into the future instead mind forward into the future and little heart. If humans were actually in full faculties of their mind and heart, the would take care of there Earth first long before going to the moon, Mars etc with humans.

...'Coral reefs are vital to human existence, supporting over 500 million people with food, income, and coastal protection while hosting 25% of all marine life. They act as natural buffers, reducing wave energy by 97% to protect shorelines from erosion and storms. Furthermore, they provide essential resources, including potential medicines and tourism revenue. '...

And this ecological disaster is unfolding before our very eyes, as are many other ecological disasters. Humans think there so smart, yet lack the heart to know what the real priorities in taking care of Rare Earth that is our home. Moon and Mars is not never will be a replacement for home. Not to mention the polution to atmosphere rockets, missiles, jets, wars causing massive petroleum spewed into our biosphere etc.

You and others are clueless to what is happening and lack mind and heart to grasp what the priorities are for humanity on Rare Earth. No surprises there eh?

Wow. really? You do know, yes, that within one lifetime, and not a long one by today's standards, we went from flying 800 feet distance at an elevation not much more the 10 feet to landing on the moon, and coming home safely to Earth. Do not belittle our ability to create new tech capable of getting to Mars and back.

50 years ago we went to the moon and 50 years later we went again, and still fraught with technical problems...That's just ten days.

Mars is a whole different kettle of fish Faux. Can't just pop there whizz around the Planet and return home in ten days. Loads of logistical and technical complications to overcome first.

Nope, very unlikely in our lifetime.

Let's wait and see what happens in 2028...That's if they can get the funding...Big war budget to think about first...Big War perhaps.

You make it so pessimistic! There was a minor glitch. They were still able to use the toilet; they just could not process/recycle the waste, and did not really need to for a 10-day journey. Give it a rest, huh? Much bigger problems could have occurred, and did not. Why not celebrate that? Because Trump is president and has revived the space program? Oh, boo-hoo.

Mars is a whole different kettle of fish

Yes, it is different, but possible and probable. At one point in the Mars orbit, each year, its is in a shortest-distance-from-Earth period, and the journey will occupy about 6 months, soonest, so we should leave several months before that window begins. In that time frame, we must return the crew to Earth within 30 days of landing on Mars, or its distance from Earth will be too great to return with current payload capacity [food, water, fuel]. Possible, yes. Difficult, certainly. I believe in probabilities, and probability calculation is within my expertise; I did it for the better part of 30 years.

These massive cuts to NASA were proposed two days after the Artemis 2 launch, while the whole world watched in awe of this monumental achievement, in the background the Trump administration was attacking NASA with proposed funding cuts that will cripple the agency going forward.

It’s always been trendy to question why we spend money on space exploration when we could be using that money to feed the poor, provide government services, and generally benefit US citizens directly, but that criticism is completely unfounded and always has been.

First, let’s recognize that less than half a penny of each tax dollar goes to NASA, and it is an investment in our future, our economy, technology, and American prestige and leadership. A dollar invested in NASA typically yields between $7 and $40 in economic value by generating significant nationwide economic output, creating high-tech jobs (over 300,000 jobs), driving innovation, delivering an estimated $7.9 billion in federal, state, and local tax revenues, and launching spinoff technologies that commercialize in the private sector. It is one of the highest ROI’s (Return On Investment) of any use of tax dollars.

OK, well what will we do with the money saved, feed the poor, provide services, no, the proposal cuts government spending on making lives better by 10% across the board. Will it result in Tax cuts then, no, this budget will require large tax increases.

Here is where it goes. This budget includes a 44% increase in Military spending, and because of the name change, last year we are spending around a trillion dollars on defense, in 2027 we are spending 1.5 trillion dollars on war. The largest increase since World War II.

This paints a pretty dark picture of who we are as a country, and what we want to become.

This is no way to make America great.
