Not sure why when people turn 50, they start acting like brain damaged 5 year olds. I notice this in a lot of old people. Online scams mainly target old people because old people are so dumb. Also, my parents couldnt learn how to use a smartphone after over a decade of using it every day. Literally, give phone to a 7 year old and 7 year old figures it out in like a week. Give phone to old person and they cant even figure out basics after years of use. I have also seen my parents fail to figure out how to use tv remote.

I think old people definitely cant consent, because they are dumber than 7 year olds. I dont see how someone who cant figure out how to use a phone or cant figure out what scam is has ability to consent to anything. And really, I have never met a smart old person. they always talk same nonsense thinking it makes them look cool while they fail at basic reasoning everywhere in life where any reasoning is needed.

President should be someone young and preferably hot. Alexander the Great conquered a lot of territory in a very short time, and he was young when he did it.

Younger people are simply way smarter than old people. "Wise old man" is a myth. Old people decay in every body part, likewise their brains decay too.

Lets use example of North Korea. Kim Jong Un gained power while he was still not too old, and today North Korea is the greatest world power.

Putin, on the other hand, is old and his brain told him to attack Ukraine. But because he is old and dumb, he failed to defeat Ukraine despite having one of most powerful militaries on Earth.

Kim Jong Un was younger and thus smarter. He is the only one to benefit from Ukraine war, because Putin was forced to give North Korea nukes in exchange for aid from North Korea.

Any country which is government by old people cannot progress because old people are used to old way of life and they cant understand modern life.

this is why a 7 year old will figure out tik tok and youtube in a very short time, but old people on tik tok are just boring and repetitive.

technology is for young people. Old people are simply technologically illiterate.

Young person learns extremely fast, while old person takes years to learn just basics.

Old people are simply tired and spent, they have no energy for anything good.

Some people think I'm old. Others think I'm a child. And still others don't think at all in my regard.

That tells me only that thinking, alone, may not be all it's cracked-up to be.

Experience... now, there's a factor few young people add to the concept of age with any sense of appreciation. Mainly, I suppose, because young people lacking experience have little of consequence of the lack.

So, one consideration is that I have personally occupied and experienced 76.17 x [7.07 x 10^11 sq. km] of space. How many of you can say that? I'll wager I am on the high side of that calculation. Maybe ebuc can tell us how many bosons fit in that accumulated space.

Another consideration is that all for whom I bear some responsibility have all been educated sufficient to know for what they must consent, and do so wilingly and with sufficient skill to be credible in their spheres of influence. I can, therefore, claim some satisfaction that my occupation of space has been worthwhile to more than myself.

Younger people desperately driven by their reproductive hormone system have a tendency to be irrational.

Hence the need for another ageist rant.

So:

Can old people consent?

Consent to what?

Old people dont have experience because dementia eats their brains slowly and makes them forget what they learn very quickly. This is why old people can use smartphone for a decade and still not know even the basics. Their "experience" doesnt exist.

With a blanket attitude like that, you, by claim, are not old, yourself, you're an ignorant child. By age, I've been around 76 years; closer to death than birth, but my mind is as clear as when I was in college [before my brain even finished development]. In fact, a year ago, I earned my fourth baccalaureate in linguistics. Never generalize when talking about groups of people. It takes all kinds with all ages, my friend, because we are individuals, not woke group-think. That may be the worst example of Marxism; that individuals do not exist. Bullshit.

Older people may struggle with smartphones due to age-related changes in vision, hearing, and motor skills; a lack of prior experience with technology;cognitive barriers like slower processing speed or memory decline; and fear of making mistakes or dealing with complex interfaces. Other factors include the fast pace of technological change, the design of many smartphones being less accessible to those with physical limitations, and a lack of interest in technology for some individuals.

I agree that I am not old.

People in 1972 werent any smart. It was time when knowing how to use tv remote was considered "higher knowledge".

I know that old people think earning a paper which says "good boy, you did well here" makes you smart, but as I said, my parents are highly educated too and they cant figure out how to use a tv remote. Education is such a scam these days, and old people fall for scams more easily.

Did you know that I have a Quantum phone?

Quantum phones are mobile devices that leverage quantum technology, particularly for enhanced security features such as quantum encryption and secure communication. This technology aims to provide users with a higher level of data protection and privacy compared to traditional smartphones.

Remember that Trump and me are 79 years old. Are you saying that people younger than us are dumb as fuck? Oh wait,

you are right, that's how Trump got elected!

Edit post

@FLRW

Average age in USA is 40. So if people past age 35 werent allowed to vote, trump likely wouldnt be president.

Young voters as a whole favored Kamala Harris to Donald Trump, 52% to 46%, in the 2024 presidential election.

You don't need to try so hard to sell your argument that all old people are tech-dummies. Unquestioned and repeated misinformation can be more harmful than acknowledged ignorance.

Which is why if/then 'logic' isn't, because the 'if' statement is virtually always currently not true, and therefore cannot justify the 'then' statement.

That's a pitiful path to logic.

Yep. Lack of interest.

Fact is, humans per se do not need smartphones, they have simply become another addictive addition to human existence, like 101 other inventions. I was born and raised pre-smartphone, so they are of no real importance to me. In fact I do not have or use a smartphone.

I do have a laptop computer though, which I find useful and entertaining, but if it broke today I wouldn't worry unduly.

Though as I always say, there is seemingly an inevitability to human material manipulation and development, so maybe within this context, technological evolution is a vital part of a bigger universal scheme.

An individual's ability to consent depends on their mental capacity, not their age

. The law presumes that all adults, regardless of age, are capable of making their own decisions unless proven otherwise. However, age-related conditions like dementia or undue influence from others can affect an older person's capacity to give valid consent.

Edit post

@Debby, @SatanLucy

The condition of incapacity by dementia or undue influence from others can affect any age group, not merely the elderly. To think otherwise is the unjust attitude of group-think.

@fauxlaw

Yes,

dementia overwhelmingly affects older adults, though it is not a normal part of aging. The likelihood of developing the condition increases significantly with age, especially after 65.

While less common, dementia can occur in younger people, a condition known as "young-onset dementia". However, the vast majority of cases are diagnosed in later life. For instance, the prevalence of dementia more than doubles every five years for people over 65, and about 25% of those 85 and older are affected. In contrast, young-onset dementia accounts for a small percentage of overall cases.

@Debby

My only point was the lack of exclusivity [dementia affecting only the aged]. Variance of percentage of those affected among groups is acknowledged

@fauxlaw

Dementia does

not exclusively affect the aged; it can also occur in younger people, a form known as young onset dementia. While age is the strongest risk factor and dementia is much more common after age 65, it can affect individuals in their 30s, 40s, or 50s. This can be caused by specific genetic factors or other underlying conditions.

One of Hollywood’s last genuine legends, Ernest Borgnine passed on at the ripe old age of 95, looking not a day older than 70.

Hmmm, I wonder how he avoided dementia?

Edit post

#28 •••
@FLRW

Ernest Borgnine remained mentally sharp and did not suffer from dementia, continuing to work in film and television until shortly before his death from renal failure at the age of 95 in 2012

He attributed his continued mental acuity and well-being to a philosophy of staying busy and active. He notably stated, "Every time I step in front of a camera I feel young again. I really do. It keeps your mind active and it keeps you going".

One pillar of consent, I assume is awareness and knowledge of situation.

Babies for example, cannot be expected to have this, due to lack of time and development.

Unless some technology changes this, it seems a pretty hard rule.

Older individuals,

Even past 100, do not as a rule lose their awareness and knowledge of a situation.

They are better treated on a case by case basis perhaps.

Individuals 'regardless of age get periodically tested for ability in various jobs and licenses.

. . .

. . .

Online scams targeting the elderly can be for various reasons I'd assume.

Loneliness for one, rather than feeble mindedness.

. . . I would assume youths possess a degree of susceptibility to fads, maybe more than older adults,

So one can argue having a long entrenched identity can be a positive.

Smartphones and the internet are still new technologies that humans are adapting to.

I do not know of the statistics of older individuals and phone use.

My parents learned easy enough.

. . . One can also argue additional factors such as lack of interest, again the established personality.

I doubt as many young people could do the crossword or jumble in the newspaper as well as a number of older individuals practiced at it.

I don't have much interactions with olde-

. . . I find several of the individuals on this site of an older age to be highly intelligent and interesting individuals.

Lack of positive interactions with older individuals is not necessarily because all older people are lacking, possibly your sample size is too small.

Could also just be cultural differences, which can occur even of people of same age.

There 'are decent arguments for setting age limits for the presidency, due to statistical risks of health issues.

. . . Course 'people have the power to vote a person into office or not, so is a rule 'really needed?

I read an interesting post once,

On technology and literacy.

In older days when public libraries did not exist, when the internet did not exist, just 'how valuable older individuals could be.

Given that they would tend to be among the 'few sources people would have of readily available collected information.

I think that is 'still true today.

Though people should be taken on an individual basis as well.

Whether body or mind, Nurture and whether people have exercised their body and mind enough or correctly has an effect.

Quick to adapt and act, is not 'always as good as a slower approach consider vast stores of data and memory.

. . .

. . .

'New technology, new ways 'tend to be for younger people, due perhaps to people preferring what they know,

I do not know the statistics of technology use and age.

The more normalized a technology is though, the more 'everyone will easily use it perhaps.

It seems a bit silly to say old people can't use Tik Tok, therefore they can't consent.

Many older people 'do use Tik Tok I assume, and as the technology is longer around, the 'more older people one will see using it.

Age does not 'stop older people from being active, sometimes more active than younger people. Individual.

Also not sure what it has to do with consent.

. . . Statistically older individuals may develop health issues admittedly. But again, individual.

Being young doesn't mean one will have energy and health.

Nor being old that one will lack energy and health.
