That said, it's not so easy to solve problems once they have arisen, especially if social expectancy has become established.

This is curious because people think otherwise nowadays, that depopulation is a threat. Fewer people wants to have children and that would be a serious risk for the sustainability of the system.

For our political system yes it would be catastrophic, particularly those running large deficits. Countries like the US depend on a growing population to pay back it's massive deficit and they depend on a workforce filled with young workers to pay into the system allowing the older population to retire. So economically, it would be terrible.

But people utilize the Earth's resources, and that is very finite. Only about 1% of the world's water is drinkable, and that's running out. Food is also a concern at the rate we're continuing to grow. Then there's pollution...

It's estimated that if everyone on earth lived like Americans the earth could only support about 2-3 billion people. We're at 8 and growing.

Or maybe stop making more people.

Americans do crazy things like build working cities in a desert. They don't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon especially when people all over the world want to break laws to get to those functional cities in the desert.

I see family cohesion and population maintenance didn’t make your list. Without a sustained population of demographic outliers, like engineers and inventors and innovators, critical job shortages snowball into chaos when living standards plummet. And when family structures weaken, you end up with shallow generations. You end up with young, disillusioned people who see no reason to contribute substantially because neither their family nor society has given them even a plausible one. The only sure thing gender equality has objectively produced for society in the last 4 decades are generations of nihilists

The lost capacity for reproduction is similarly a problem when men die in war if the society does not tolerate polygyny. This is actually one of the most beneficial things about polygyny is its utility in addressing male to female population imbalances which result from war or regional imbalances due to economic migration.
