The US is a definitively secular nation, founded on complete separation of the State and religion. The Left Wing of US realise this but don't realise that pure freedom requires as low tax and free access to guns as possible. The Right Wing of US don't realise that secular pure freedom means the LGBTQ+ and abortion agendas both end up in line with US's liberty-first ethos.

The Vatican is a small town populated by like 700 senior citizens which is de facto under Italy's protection. They don't need a proper army, but also trying to procure one would rub most people the wrong way, as in them having delusions of grandeur as some kind of great secular power. That's not how the modern Vatican wishes to frame itself.
It's also worth noting, of course, that Rome is Italy's capital, and Italy wouldn't exactly appreciate having a foreign army garrisoned within striking distance of where the top leaders of their government work and congregate.
