This setup is based on the 2011 anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and does not include lore from movies except for the first two, which are recuts of the show.

Rules

Standard rules apply:

  1. Do not copy-paste from your role card. Do not post anything that looks like it was copy-pasted from a role card. This rule does not apply to quoting one or a few words to convey basic information, e.g., your role and character. The reasonable person test applies. If you are not sure whether or not you paraphrased enough, ask me. Do not use generative AI, e.g., ChatGPT, to paraphrase your PM. Avoid talking about the formatting of role PMs.
  2. Do not edit or delete messages.
  3. Do not post or like posts while dead.
  4. Until the game is over, do not discuss it outside the approved channels, i.e., the day thread, moderator PMs, and faction chats.
  5. Do not use cryptography or otherwise post anything in the day thread with the intention of obscuring it so that only specific player(s) can read it.
  6. Be as bitchy as you want unless and until someone asks me to cool things down.
  7. I reserve the right to add commonplace or common-sense rules at any time.

Mod notes

  1. As usual on here, days will be 72 hours maximum and nights will be 24 hours maximum, but phases might end early.
  2. I prefer to do mod communications through Discord. DebateCraft messages work too.
  3. Setting your Discord status to invisible is strongly encouraged.
  4. All roles were assigned randomly using random.org. If there are game mechanics which require randomness, random.org will supply it. It should go without saying that randomness is random, but I might as well say it, if only to set a standard.
  5. Scum have been provided with fake-claims and/or information to help them concoct fake-claims. There may be anti-claim mechanics.
  6. There may be at least one role with a hidden ability. Your role card will mention it if you have one. Hidden abilities will be revealed with your role flip and may appear in results of investigative abilities.
  7. Ask questions about how roles work through Discord or DebateCraft messages. I will not answer such questions posted publicly. I will only answer questions which involve your own role, your scum partner's role if you are scum, or flipped roles. I will try to answer questions about how hypothetical roles would interact with roles in those three categories. You are implored to ask questions. The worst response I can give is that I cannot answer your question, which is not meant to dissuade you from asking more questions.
  8. Town win when all threats to town have been eliminated. Mafia win at scum parity, i.e., when there are at least as many scum alive as non-scum. If there are neutrals, they have their own win conditions.

Forum signatures are bullshit. Nobody wants to waste their time and bandwidth reading something they have read 29,998,559,671,349 times before.

Episode 1 ends at midnight Central time on 23 November. With eight players alive, it takes five votes to lynch. Be warned that there are oddities surrounding voting which apply only for this day phase. I first saw them in a dream... or something.

Damn this went up late last night.

It's another theme I know very well, though it's been a good while since I've seen the show. Long and short of it, for those who don't know:

Madoka Magica is a mahou shoujo (magical girl) series about a group of middle school students who are approached by an effectively immortal Pokémon-looking creature called Kyuubey. He offers to grant their wishes and turn them into magical girls to fight creatures called witches that create their own little pocket dimensions where the animation gets crazy. I'll avoid spoilers unless necessary, but the long and short of it is that this isn't a sweetheart deal and, unlike most magical girl series, shit gets fucked up pretty fast and often. It's a story about obsession, sacrifice, and regularly rides the line between hope and despair. Yep, pretty upbeat.

Like last game, I have some idea of who is most likely to be in this one, but I'm going to avoid listing them out directly for now. With 8 players, we can expect the breakdown to contain some subset of these:

Five magical girls

One duplicitous asshole magical creature

One infamous witch

Two friends

One or two parents

One teacher

So there is a little more room this time for fake claims. Thoth's also apparently given scum some info on claims and/or just straight up fake claims. There could be an anti-claim mechanic in play, so keep that in mind before seeking out claims. Also, I'm not fishing for anyone to state this, but my character card does not include any mention of a hidden ability.

Under no circumstance should we character claim this day phase nor should we even hint to it.

Largely agreed, hence I'm not providing a character list. If we get to the point where we're pushing a lynch, that calculus might change, but no one should be character claiming at this point.

No one should character claim at all on dp1 point blank period.

If it's between lynching blind and lynching a known entity, absent any other context, I'd choose the latter the vast majority of the time.

I recognize, however, that it may not be that kind of choice. With an even number of players, a NL might make the most sense at the end of this DP. Depends if we have a strong enough scumread.

Edit post

ISO #9 •••

Just to clarify because it may not have come across, "a known entity" is a claim, not a certainty. And in the event that we don't have a strong scumread and decide to NL, I agree no one should character claim DP1.

If anyone is forced to claim them kt should be a soft role claim. Absolutely no character claims.

Fair point. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I agree with Whiteflame’s thoughts.

Also, if we are about to lynch someone, we should make them full claim. Triggering anti-claim is preferable to mislynching imo.

Hello, everyone! It's good to be back. I know absolutely nothing about this theme aside from what WF has already shared, so I appreciate that. I agree with not character claiming due to possible Anticlaim.

Hi everyone. Have work and gym session today but should get some thoughts out

Despite knowing a lot about anime, I have not seen Madoka Mágica so I am not familiar with this theme

I can guarantee that there’s at least one scam on my wagon.

I'm always at a disadvantage when it comes to anime and manga. I'll post a bit more when I'm back from Thanksgiving dinner at grandma's nursing home this evening.

Preliminary notes:

"If" there are mechanics which require randomness? "If" there are neutrals? So possiblyprobably a TP and possiblyprobably some kind of randomizer craziness down the road.

Alright, well that's one of the obvious ones down with the Madoka reveal. In case the title of the series didn't give it away, she is a main character in the series and its central focus throughout most of this season. Bit of context (and yes, this is where I have to get into spoilers): she spends much of the series avoiding making a contract with Kyubey before deciding to make a wish in the end that effectively makes her into a benevolent god of this world. Doesn't make Mag1c 100% town since we don't know the theme split, but I'd say it's far more likely that he's town than not.

Honestly have no idea, but I would think anti-claim is in place to prevent us from claiming, so it would be pretty messed up if a triggered hidden mechanic where the mod confirms your character triggers something.

ISO #27 •••

Leaning magic town. 100% absolutely no character claims whatsoever

I wouldn't jump to this conclusion; seems like boilerplate OP stuff to me. I doubt there's a 3P in an eight player game. That sort of thing is hard to balance.

I'd be cautious about leaning too hard on this sort of analysis. It's not all too uncommon for protagonists to be scum - hell, I made the main two characters of Deltarune the scum team in my game. Granted, I'd agree that he's more likely town than scum, but I'd still only put him in lean town at best based on his character.

This much I agree with, I don't think Thoth would put in a mechanic that could punish the town just because of random chance.
