I would suggest that punishment, revenge and inherent selfishness have always afforded us the ability to be selectively moral.

Well firstly, meta-ethics is a somewhat woolly philosophical exercise.

And ethics are the principles that govern an individual or group behaviour.

It's incorrect to think that ethical means cuddly wuddly, and unethical means horrible worrible.

Because we only assume to know which is which, and our own principles might not correspond with someone else's.

An obvious example would be the comparative moral principles of the vegan and the omnivore.

Well, one could argue that:

A. If the premise is true, then the conclusion must be true

B. If the premise is false, then the conclusion must be false.

C. If the premise is false, then nonetheless, the conclusion is still true to the premise.

D. If the premise is speculative, then the conclusion might be true or false or speculative.

I could probably make up a hundred more versions, because the beauty of words and language is such.

Though in terms of the theism/atheism contention, then D. is perhaps a suitable option.

Though if the premise cannot be substantiated then the exercise is always going to be somewhat futile anyway.
