and in other cultures it's seen as a sign of being homeless, filthy, low class etc. Proving that it's a cultural aspect that has a hybrid origin; if the ethnicity looks very unappealing without them they tend to lean towards encouraging beard growth and shaming a lack of it, in contrast if they have poor beard growth on average they tend to push a more 'clean' less bearded look and very big beards get shamed instead.
