I was asked to post this thread. I have a number of these in my upcoming NYT best seller memoir. I’ve copied one of the more mild ones below, and encourage others to share similar cringe hijinks:

It was the first day of the summer after 8th grade, and I had convinced my mother to take me to the library. The purpose of this visit was to acquire literature relating to my latest obsession: ants. I at first attempted to find an “adult book” on the subject but, failing to successfully navigate the Dewey Decimal System, I quickly went to the familiar children’s section. I cobbled together all of the books they had on ants, including some that were particularly childish. At the top of the pile was a bright green book with a drawing of an anthropomorphic ant on the cover.

As I went to find my mother, I heard someone calling my name. Turning around, I saw two girls from school that I was friends with approaching. I quickly tried to reshuffle my pile of books, but all that did was draw even more attention to the stack. The ensuing conversation was painful.

“Whatcha’ got there?”

“Oh I uh…”

“Oh um…ants…that’s cool…”

“yeah uhh they are really interesting”

I could see the emotions on their faces rapidly shift from friendly curiosity, to confusion, to bemused disbelief, and finally to contempt as they took in the situation.

“…well have a good summer.”

I never heard from either of them again

I got catcalled by 2 girls while riding my bike in front of the local JCC (Jewish Community Center) at about that same age. I had no clue how to respond, and I think I pedalled faster.

Women often mock men for acting childlish. Yet there is a bunch of women out there doing age playing, pretending they are babies in relationship with their "dada" (daddy). Make it make sense.

Pretty sure I would’ve had a worse time if I had run into some 14 year old boys circa 2009 while I was holding an ant book made for six year olds lol

A young man entered the room along with a woman who appeared to be about 20 years older. I asked if she was his mom. She was, in fact, his wife. I don't think I said anything more in that room after that.

Some guy at my high school handwrote an essay about Japanese people, got tired of writing the word Japanese, and started shortening it to Japs unaware that it was a racial slur. He got a 0 and the teacher refused to change his grade.

My parents had a custody hearing on the same day that my entire class had a field trip scheduled to the courthouse. I had taken time off school and wasn't even aware of the field trip.

So I'm sitting in the gallery, hear the door open, turn around and think oh hey that's my history teacher.

He proceeds to lead my entire grade into the courtroom in a long line, who all begin sitting down, one row after another, to publicly view the court proceedings. My classmates spot me, some wave, some point, most start talking to each other with animation. I went white as a sheet.

My mom jumps up and starts saying "THIS IS TRAUMATIZING FOR HER" in a loud voice, and she was not wrong but when I tell you I just wanted to sink through the floor and die lol.

I might post my worst personal cringe anecdote here if we had spoiler tags.

The second-worst was in high school, when a girl asked me if I wanted to watch a movie at her place later and her parents wouldn't be home. I turned her down because I'm mostly not a movie person. Only years later did I realize what she wanted.

Who the hell allowed that?

@SatanLucy

That would be Judge Crowe, who was later replaced for being generally terrible.

We used to have this couple in high school that would curl up in the stairwell and start aggressively making out during passing period. It was super weird and if you stared at them they would get mad. Sometimes I wonder how they are doing

I worked at a seafood restaurant (that gave me warts, I'm pretty sure) for a couple of years, and across the street from it was a gas station where I'd go when things got slow-ish to buy a little snack.

One day I walked to the store and realized that I didn't have my wallet on me. Two female customers had left the shop right before I did, and at some point I guess had been standing close enough they hypothetically could've lifted it off my person, so I went outside and asked them if they'd taken it.

One of them responded to the effect of "What, and should we remove our bras?". Apparently she thought I was some kind of sexual harasser looking to strip search them.

(It turned out I'd left the wallet at home.)

Maing, if I had just gotten that Ass Burgers diagnosis sooner. I got what so many high school boys can only dream of and I didn't even know I got it.

Here's another one. In 2019, on a trip to Chicago with my quiz bowl team, I found a mall shop where you could order a ring with someone's name on it and come back later to pick it up. I got one with my name on it. A few hours later, I realized that people usually get those with their significant other's name on it. So firstly there's the cringe of missing the point, and possibly a double heaping of cringe if the guy was a homophobe who kept his mouth shut.

I actually cared about a website community that didnt give a shit about me for over a decade.

I wasted huge proportions of time on ensuring its iteration stayed active while mocked, hated and laughed at.

Then I dedicated to a religion that tokd me to forgive them and keep trying my best regardless to love them.

Then I realised only very recently how cringe my entire life has been and that Christianity is a masochistic religion.

My first Job out of college was in the trading department of a bank, a senior trader there was a woman that looked pregnant to me, I asked her when she was due and... oh crap, she wasn't pregnant, just had a beer belly. If looks could kill she would have vaporized me, I had to work with her for two years and the relationship never got much better.

I never made that mistake again; I don't care if a woman is in labor in a maternity ward, I do not assume she's pregnant till she actually tells me she is...even then I'm careful.

My brother and I collected Pokémon cards as kids. We would go over to my uncle's house who was in WW2 (War in the Pacific) for family parties and to walk in the woods and play with his turkeys. At one party we were looking at my cards and my brother showed my uncle his holographic Charizard and tried to explain the whole concept to him. When he mentioned he had spent $100 on it my uncle just looked at his friend in horrified disbelief and exclaimed 'we beat the Japs at Guadalcanal and now they've got our kids paying a hundred bucks for a piece of cardboard with a lizard drawn on it.' Never really got into any 'collectible' craze after that lol.

"I posted cringe on internet forums for years. Instead of maturing as a person, learning to laugh at myself, and going 'wow, haha, that sure was cringe' years later I am still seething and blaming God over people calling me cringe."

Cant get all the hours back and spend it on an online community worth it instead.

That is on me.
