I don't think I made myself clear: I agree with you. There's a certain strain of thinker who will say "look, colonialism is awful but it's progress towards socialism and mutual recognition of each others personhood because it breaks up antiquated social systems and replaced them with capitalism (a necessary step on the way to full communism)." See for example Marx's writings on India. The idea is that history is progressing towards a full realization of each other as similarly "civilized" people so race and nationality and so on don't matter, and we unite as one.
Obviously this line of reasoning is bullshit (I wish I could bold this statement).
We are not coming to a point in time where differences among us don't matter. Western bourgeois culture has always (and will into the future one predicts) recognized non-Western societies as other, different, and "uncivilized." The belief that colonialism will create a "universal humanity" is what I seem metaphysics. Colonialism has always been about the opposite: marking others as unequal and thus justifying colonialism. Does that make more sense?
Yo I don't know if anyone is going to argue this seriously with you. Maybe a hyper-committed Marxist will be like "original accumulation is necessary for capitalism which is necessary for socialism and history is a gradual progression to a communist world ordee" (quite Hegelian) but even then a well-read Marxist would have also read On the Concept of History or Wretched of the Earth which contests this notion of unilateral, linear progress. There is this weird fucking professor who wrote a paper in Third World Quarterly supporting colonialism and then he made a book about it (if memory serves the essay ended with him advocating for recolonizing Africa). I think his name was Bruce Gilley? Anyway, he's not a Marxist. He's more a "Western exceptionalist" if that makes sense. He also probably huffs our fry oil here at McDonalds (TM). But yeah, the world is not arriving at a mutual recognition of each other as subjects or "civilized folk." That shit is metaphysics.
