Yeah, you got me there. I specifically remembered Helz saying in one of the Mafia channels in the DebateCraft server that he knew Mestari from MU and thought he was really good, but it looks like my brain made that up. I think I mixed it up with where Helz said that he himself had devoted a bunch of time to studying Mafia theory. All these (from my perspective) newcomers get jumbled together in my mind.

Thoth
I know how to do it if they couldn't recruit the same person, but that makes it harder.

On second thought, it's not that much harder. The probability they recruited at least one scum on night 0 is about 3/5. (16 * 15)^2 = 57,600 possible recruitment offers, of which (12 * 11)^2 = 17,424 invite only townies to both guilds. We should act under the assumption that Mafia have an interior line into at least one guild.

Thoth
I disagree. First off, you're potentially activating more roles for town.

At the price of waiving ones that have already been activated. A little now can be worth a lot later.

Second, you're exchanging more information in the Guild chats, which can allow for a more coordinated plan of attack each NP. That can be a negative if scum or a TP is present, but speaking from experience having recruited Luna in a recent game as scum, being stuck in a chat where you're expected to divulge information and regularly interact can lead to some pretty easy mistakes.

It can definitely lead to easy mistakes, but that's just one side of the equation.

It becomes a whole lot harder to hide in a group of, say, 3-5 in a Discord server vs. the whole 17 person game on here.

Agreed

Third, I'm also not convinced "that Mafia have zero wiretaps now". Wylted and Luna went into their recruitments blind. They could absolutely have recruited scum, and especially during DP1, that's going to be harder to determine since there's so little to go off of. The numbers make it less likely than when they recruit more people, but those recruitments will at least be informed by behavior. So, no, I don't think we should assume their channels are clean.

I know. It's very unlikely, but possible, that they recruited all four scum. But the more they recruit, the higher the probability of at least one scum in each guild grows. (Now I've been nerd-sniped by calculating the probability that at least one scum was recruited on night 0. I know how to do it if they couldn't recruit the same person, but that makes it harder.)

Thoth
Weren't you the guy who JUST SUGGESTED WE ALL SOFT?!

No, I am the guy who suggested that we discuss whether or not we should soft

Thoth
Wasting recruits by targeting the same people means less roles get activated on the big night.

If we want a big night, it needs to be as big as possible, so it should be tonight.

Thoth
We're not operating under the assumption that guild chats are mason chats. That's silly. We want more power roles active. There are a lot of night phases to go. Let's get long term value. Trust the process.

It literally says in the day 1 OP that the guilds have mason chats. Presumably ones that are active during all days and all nights.

Thoth

Notwithstanding that, if they know that the guilds will recruit, scum would likely be willing to make major sacrifices to get that interior line. Maybe even hard-bussing a scummate or claiming something confirmable and not following up.

Thoth
Been meaning to come back to this. I think this is an excellent idea. I think recruiting NP1 should be a given (no NK definitely helps there, and each Guild needs to build up its numbers so they have more night actions to use), then it becomes a question of how often they would agree to do it. Seems worth considering, especially if the Guilds can joint win with the same number of recruits.

I think it's actually wiser to say fuck recruiting and just use your actions. With probably six people in guild chats, there's a good chance that Mafia have zero wiretaps now and I don't think taking that risk is worth waiving night actions.

Thoth
No because mafia who are recruited already and people who die later don't count. It's a stupid mechanic that I'm choosing to ignore because it sets the town up to fail. This is a prisoners experiment where winning is ignoring it altogether. The idea that you play towards the guild wincon means (1) sacrificing the use of town power roles to gain numbers that do nothing to help the town win so long as you continue recruiting, and (2) creates scenarios where you must lynch town over mafia deliberately to win.

Well, yeah? It creates different incentives than exist in a straight Town versus Mafia game. Just because it's different does not make it stupid.

Thoth

Man, if I were scum here and Mestari and Pie were both town, I would be living the dream vacation. The two fearkill targets going mano-a-mano while I get to kick my feet up. This concerns me.

Thoth

As far as I can tell, there was no reason for Mikal to specify that Mafia don't count towards faction totals, since there won't be any Mafia alive at the end of the game anyway if Town win.

Thoth

I say don't recruit anyone to make it more likely they will all be dead when the game ends so they all have 0 members

Thoth

If I correctly understand how guild recruitment works, this could give an interesting game-theoretic solution: If both guilds don't recruit anyone from now on, they will have the same number of members and should all win together. I will ask Mikal whether or not a tie in members lets the guild leader win.

Thoth

I drink Mexican Mudslides occasionally, but not for the alcohol content, just because it's spicy chocolate milk and my favorite milk has always come from brown cows.

Thoth

Lol and you got me about how softing that you're not in the show just means you are yourself. didn't think of that

Thoth
Solo Leveling isn't exactly a series known for having a lot of main characters, so no, I don't like this idea at all. Softing this game seems especially pointless given how many people are likely to just say their characters are themselves.

That's about all I needed to hear to drop that topic, then.

Thoth
I'm not about to make a game relevant comment, but how does one get "legitimately drunk" off Moscato?

Speaking of game-irrelevant comments, I have superhumanly high alcohol tolerance. I gave up drinking for fear of turning my liver into a deather after downing eight ounces of 151-proof Everclear and feeling nothing.

Thoth
Middle child is better than youngest. My brother is the youngest and he is a huge pussy and is emotional like a girl. Always having tantrums and yelling

Chip off the ol' block huh?

Thoth

Reminds me of last game when scum suggested claiming you as the banhammer-holder who could not VTL unless it was a hammer

I'll tentatively buy it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a cover for ascetic scum

I'm reading back to see why you decided to claim

Thoth
Interesting. Seems like if you sanitized it to the point of being fair there would be little actionable utility in the information anyway.

Exactly.

I leave to go put Hot Pockets in the air fryer and there are two new pages. Probably three by the time I finish writing this sentence. Why do I keep signing up for these?

Thoth

I'd like to suggest that we DISCUSS softing whether we are a show character or ourselves. Not that we do it, but that we discuss whether or not we should do it.

Thoth

I came up with a custom role for Culture (Iain Banks) Mafia where you could get a live feed of scum chat after you died and forward messages from it to a living player, after the messages were sanitized according to some strict rules. I gave it up because I couldn't figure out how to stop it from being broken without draconian restrictions, plus it felt like a violation of privacy to me.

Thoth
11 v 4 tho assuming no third parties. But with possible third parties plus possible faction sabotage, I don't think the extra night actions are worth sacrificing a few townies in that circumstance

It's impossible to figure out without knowing how strong town's abilities are.
