Thoth 6

I think this is a chapter in this site's Mafia history that we would all rather leave behind us, but I might as well post a belated endgame thread. I cancelled this game because nobody seemed to be having fun, and also because the game was looking townsided. I said several times that I thought the setup was balanced, and I stand by that assessment, but a theoretically balanced game can become unbalanced when nobody knows what's going on. There are multiple reasons why this game works better in real life than on a forum, but probably the biggest one is that you can quickly crash and burn through a few games in one session to learn the rules and see how aspects of the game's design that might look stupid or nonsensical at first are part of a complex machine with many moving parts meant to work together.

Scum also got the short end of the stick on night 0, with multiple investigatives inculpating them and whiteflame blindly poisoning wylted. I don't think it was unsalvageable since wylted could show up as Town to Shining and awesome5000 at my discretion, which I would have done since scum were doing so badly, but Evil would have had an uphill battle when everyone was too tired of the game to coast along.

Role list:

awesome5000 - Fortune Teller (wrong Soldier shown to Washerwoman)

Banana - Chef

ILikePie5 - Imp

Kohai - Ravenkeeper

Magoroth - Soldier (Red Herring; shows as Demon to Fortune Teller)

Neros - Washerwoman

RexFavilla - Virgin

Shining - Empath

whiteflame - Poisoner

wylted - Spy

Covers shown to Demon: Monk, Slayer, Undertaker

Night 0 actions:

awesome5000 checks whiteflame and ILikePie5. He learns that one of them is the Demon.

Banana learns there is 1 pair of Evil players (whiteflame/wylted).

Neros learns that awesome5000 or Magoroth is the Soldier.

Shining learns that 1 of his living neighbors, whiteflame, is Evil.

whiteflame poisons wylted.

wylted, who is Poisoned, receives false information. I showed him a totally wrong role list except for the identity of his evil teammates in hopes that he would quickly realize something was wrong and open chats with them to figure out what was wrong. wylted and whiteflame eventually caught on. I wonder if I should have given wylted correct information since Good had such a strong night 0, but then he might have wondered if it was wrong.

I'm not going to give a play-by-play of the game here since I don't think anyone really cares that much, but I can offer commentary about what went on behind the scenes if you want. Just one thing I want to point out: How in the blue mother of fuck did people let Pie get away with opening a chat with everyone in the game? This is a testament to what you can get away with by saying you are doing it without extra comment or drawing attention to it. I would say that only Pie has the aura to get a pass on bullshit like that, but I wouldn't have believed that even he could do it.

Setup Information

Roles flip immediately upon death.

There are 7 town, 2 scum, and 1 third-party. Town win if all scum are dead by the end of day 3, after the lynch. Scum win if they reach parity, or if at least one scum is alive after the lynch on day 3, or if nothing can prevent one of those things from happening. The third-party has a separate win condition, counts as town for parity, and can share the win with town or scum.

The theme split is Majora and Skull Kid versus everyone else. Scum have been given at least two characters as fake-claims. They can also get correct answers to four questions about whether or not a role exists in the game.

There are no anti-claim mechanics in the strictest sense, but claiming may allow scum to use their roles to greater effect, even more so than usual.

Roles may have names, e.g., Cop, Doctor, or they may not. There may be at least one custom role.

Day actions must be submitted within 48 hours after the day phase starts. Day actions are processed in the order they are submitted.

Rules That You Should All Know Anyway

No copy-pasting your role PM or pretending to do so. No editing or deleting posts and no deadposting, which should not be possible now anyway. No outside-game communication. No talking about the game between dead and living players either. Dead players talking about it to each other is okay. No cryptography or ciphers. Breadcrumbing is fine. Be as bitchy as you want unless and until someone asks me to cool things down. I reserve the right to add commonplace or common-sense rules at any time.

Thoth 16

Having trashed Blood on Clocktower as a failed experiment, I would like to keep my spot in the queue, but run a faster game since I've used up about a day phase worth of time. That gives me the perfect opportunity to run an idea I've had for a while: Majora's Mask, a townsided game except that town have to eliminate all scum by the end of Day 3. We are going from Clocktower to Clock Town. There will probably be extra kills, depending on how many players sign up. I am hoping for at least ten players and to start tonight or tomorrow.

Introduction

This is my first time hosting Blood on the Clocktower. I am using the script Trouble Brewing, which is beginner-friendly and has been extensively tested and found to be well balanced. My intent is to run the game mostly according to the official rules except for voting, which I had to change from the real-life version because I can't expect all of you to be on at the same time. Also, I am not using Travellers, so it's fine if you don't know what those are. However, some roles are poorly worded in the official script, and I used unofficial sources to answer some of my questions about them, so hopefully I understand everything correctly. I rewrote the role list to more clearly explain what each role does, or, at least, what I think it does.

To give everyone more time to acclimate to a complicated game which is fairly different from Mafia and which I presume none of you have played before, day phase 1 will last for four days. Future day phases will last for 72 hours plus possible spare change if the night phase ends early. Please let me know if you have any questions! Bombard me with questions if anything is even slightly unclear to you!

I chose which roles would be in the game, but assigned them randomly.

Win Conditions

There are two teams: Good and Evil. There are no neutrals. Townsfolk are Good. Outsiders are also Good, but have roles that hinder Good. The Demon and their Minions are Evil. Good wins when the Demon is eliminated. Evil wins when there are only two players alive and at least one of them is Evil, or when nothing can prevent this from occurring.

Starting Information

With ten players, there are seven Townsfolk, one Demon, and two Minions. If there is a Baron, two of those seven Townsfolk are instead Outsiders.

During Night 0, the Demon learned who their Minions are, but not their roles. The Minions learned who the Demon is, but not who the other Minion is or what their role is. (In general, I believe that Minions are not told the Demon's role, but that is a moot point in Trouble Brewing since it only has one type of Demon.) The Demon was told three Good roles that are not in the game. These roles were not chosen randomly. Minions were not given fake-claims, but, of course, the Demon may share them privately. Poisoning cannot affect this information.

Group Chats

Please read this section especially carefully! I will be lenient with accidents, but making group chats without following these rules is outside game communication.

Any player may form any number of group chats with any number of other players at any time during any day phase. Note that there is no communication between players at night, not even for the Evil team. Chats are done with group DMs on Discord. Please let me know if you need help with this.

To create a group chat:

  1. When you start a chat, state in the game thread which player(s) you are chatting with. You must invite me (Thoth) to all group chats. You do not need someone's permission to start a group chat with them.
  2. When you add players to an existing chat, state who you are adding to the chat and who is already in the chat. Only the player who started a chat may add people to that chat. However, it is okay for there to be multiple chats with the same people in them. So, you could have a chat started by Person A with Person B in it, and a chat started by Person B with Person A in it, and a chat started by Person A with Person B and Person C in it.
  3. Anyone in a chat may end it at any time. Do not delete the chat or leave it. Ending a chat just means that nobody may send more messages to it. If you close a chat, you must publicly announce that you are closing the chat and who was in it, and also state in the chat that you are closing it.
  4. Whenever you announce that you added people to a chat or closed a chat, be sure to mention who started that chat.
  5. All chats close at the end of each day. Again, do not delete any chats or leave them.

Up to ten people can be in a Discord group DM at once. With ten players plus the game host, that's room for everyone since you can post in the thread if you want to talk to all ten players!

Storyteller Discretion

In Blood on the Clocktower, the Storyteller (i.e., the game host, i.e., Thoth) has some discretion over what information players receive and how certain abilities work, with the goal of choosing the results that make the game the most fun or balanced, usually by helping whichever team is doing worse. The only mechanics subject to Storyteller discretion are the ones mentioned in the role list, including Drunkenness and Poisoning. Everything else works as advertised and returns honest results.

Drunkenness & Poisoning

If a player is Drunk or Poisoned, any information they receive from abilities is decided by the Storyteller, and non-investigative abilities do not work. The Storyteller may choose to give Drunk or Poisoned players true information. The Storyteller will not tell players when they are Drunk or Poisoned, and will go through the motions as though their abilities were functioning normally. Note that, in this script, Drunkenness lasts for the entire game, whereas Poisoning only lasts for a night and the following day. If a player uses a once-per-game ability while Poisoned, they may not use that ability again.

Death

When you die, you lose all of your role abilities unless your role states otherwise, but investigative abilities still see your role. You may post publicly and participate in group chats just as you could when you were alive. Your voting power is replaced with a "ghost vote". See the Voting section below. Roles and alignments do not flip upon death.

Voting

Living players can vote to lynch any number of players at once, so there is no reason for anyone to use the voting bot. I will keep track of votes manually. Unofficial vote counts are appreciated.

To vote for someone, post VTL [Player Name]. To remove your vote on someone, post Unvote. At the end of each day, the player with the most votes dies if they had at least half as many votes as living players. For example, if 6 players are alive and 4 are dead, then someone with 2 or fewer votes lives even if they had the most votes. If there is a tie for the most votes, nobody dies.

When you die, you lose your regular voting power and gain a "ghost vote". You may cast this ghost vote only once in the rest of the game, you may not unvote once you cast it, and you may only cast it for someone who a living player has voted for that day. You may vote for someone a living player voted for that day even if all living players have removed their votes on them.

Script (Trouble Brewing)

The script is a list of roles that can be in the game. No role outside this list can be in the game. Only one of each role can be in the game. Remember that dead players lose all of their role abilities unless otherwise specified.

Unless otherwise specified: all roles have a Night 0; abilities are not optional; abilities can be used on both living and dead players; targets are not told they were targeted. Players in adjacent seats are paired. The player list 'loops around', so the first and last players are adjacent.

Townsfolk

  1. Chef | On Night 0, you learn how many adjacent pairs of Evil players there are. A player is part of two pairs, so, for example, if three Evil players are adjacent, this counts as two pairs.
  2. Empath | Each night, you learn how many living players adjacent to you are Evil after the night-kill. Dead players are skipped, so you learn about the two alive players closest to you.
  3. Fortune Teller | Each night, choose two players. If one of them is the Demon, you are told Yes, and otherwise told No. Before the game started, one Good player was chosen to be a Red Herring. They register as a Demon to you. They were not told they are the Red Herring. Note that you can be the Red Herring.
  4. Investigator | On Night 0, you learn that one of two players is a particular Minion. The other player is chosen by the Storyteller, not randomly.
  5. Librarian | On Night 0, you learn that one of two players is a particular Outsider. The other player is chosen by the Storyteller, not randomly. If there are no Outsiders, you instead learn that there are no Outsiders. Note that, if you learn that a player is the Drunk, you do not learn which Townsfolk they were told they are.
  6. Mayor | Good wins if a day ends without a lynch and with exactly three players alive. At the Storyteller's discretion, if you would die at night, another player of the Storyteller's choice might die instead. This cannot override protection from the Monk or Soldier.
  7. Monk | Each night other than Night 0, choose a player other than yourself. They cannot be killed that night.
  8. Ravenkeeper | If you die at night, choose a player. You learn their role at the start of the next day. Note that you can see a dead player's role.
  9. Slayer | Once per game, during any day phase, you may privately tell the Storyteller that you are shooting at a player. The Storyteller will publicly announce who you shot at and the result of your shot. If your target was the Demon, they die. Otherwise, the Storyteller will announce that your shot failed. Anyone may fake-claim Slayer by asking the Storyteller to announce a Slayer shot on a chosen player. The Storyteller will announce the shot as though it were real, but it will fail. The same applies to Drunk or Poisoned Slayers.
  10. Soldier | You cannot be killed at night.
  11. Undertaker | Each night other than Night 0, you learn the role of whoever was lynched the previous day. Note that, if you learn that a player is the Drunk, you do not learn which Townsfolk they were told they are.
  12. Virgin | The first time in the game that someone votes for you, if they are a Townsfolk, they are lynched and the day ends immediately. Note that the Virgin loses their ability if the first vote for them is cast while they are Poisoned, even though it does not trigger.
  13. Washerwoman | On Night 0, you learn that one of two players is a particular Townsfolk. The other player is chosen by the Storyteller, not randomly.

Outsider

  1. Butler | Each night, you must choose a player other than yourself to be your Master. The following day, you may only vote for a player if your Master is also voting for them. If your Master unvotes, your vote will also be removed.
  2. Drunk | You are told that you are a particular Townsfolk, but you are not. See Drunkenness & Poisoning. If there is a Drunk, the role that the Drunk is told they have cannot be in the game.
  3. Recluse | At the Storyteller's discretion, abilities may give results as though you are Evil or any Evil-aligned role, even if you are dead.
  4. Saint | Evil wins if you are lynched.

Minion

  1. Baron | If there is a Baron when the game starts, two players who would be Townsfolk are Outsiders instead.
  2. Poisoner | Each night, choose a player to be Poisoned for that night and the following day. Note that Poisoning can affect roles that learn information on Night 0, including Investigator, Librarian, and Washerwoman.
  3. Scarlet Woman | If you and at least three other players are alive after the Demon dies, you become the new Demon (Imp) and the game continues. The Demon does not count as one of the three other players. Note that you must become the new Demon if the current Demon kills themselves while you are alive.
  4. Spy | At the Storyteller's discretion, abilities may give results as though you are Good or as though you are any Townsfolk or Outsider, even if you are dead. Note that this affects Librarian and Washerwoman. Each night, you learn everyone's role. If applicable, you learn each night: which Townsfolk the Drunk thinks they are; the Fortune Teller's Red Herring; the incorrect player given to the Investigator, Librarian, and Washerwoman; who the Demon's kill targeted; who the Monk protected; who is Poisoned; and who the Butler chose as their Master. Note that you can, at the Storyteller's discretion, be killed for nominating a Virgin.

Demon

  1. Imp | Each night other than Night 0, choose a player to kill. You must choose a kill target, but you may kill a dead player, which has no effect. If you have at least one living Minion, you may kill yourself. If you do, a living Minion becomes the new Imp, removing their previous role. If more than one Minion is alive, the Storyteller chooses which one becomes the new Imp, unless one of them is a Scarlet Woman, in which case they must become the new Imp.
Thoth 18

I think our Mafia community is overdue for an injection of variety. Blood on the Clocktower is a social deduction game in the same family as Mafia, maybe even the same genus, but the main mechanics are very different. It was designed to be played in real life, so I am making some changes for online play. You will need to be in the Discord server to play, since that's where private chats will be. I will send you an invite once you sign up. I am hoping for at least ten players. We can go with as few as seven or as many as fifteen.

Here is a non-comprehensive list of differences between Mafia as we are used to it on this site and Blood on the Clocktower:

  1. There are two teams: Good and Evil. Good wins when the Demon is lynched. Evil wins when there are two players alive and at least one is Evil, or when there is no way for Good to win, e.g., if all living players are Evil, since nobody can nominate the Demon.
  2. You can create semi-private group chats with other players during the day. What you say is private, but who is in each chat is public knowledge. (This is crucial information. Remember that the next time you hear the government say that collecting metadata is not an invasion of privacy.) Evil players have to create group chats like anyone else to communicate outside the thread, and there is no night chat.
  3. Roles are drawn from a script: a list of roles that could be in the game. Which roles are in the game is secret. Against my impulse to run something customized or complicated with Thothy flair, I am using the script Trouble Brewing, which is beginner-friendly and has been extensively tested and found to be almost perfectly balanced.
  4. Dead players can keep talking with living players, both publicly and privately, and can cast one vote after they die. They cannot nominate, i.e., cannot be the first person to vote for someone that day, they lose their role's abilities, and they don't count towards how many people are needed to lynch. Roles and alignments do not flip upon death.
  5. Some mechanics give the Storyteller (i.e, the game host, i.e, Thoth) limited discretion to choose the results they think will make the fun the most fun or balanced. These mechanics are publicly known from the start of the game. It's not freeform bastard.
  6. In real-life Blood on the Clocktower, voting is done by one player nominating another player during the voting period, which is after each day's discussion period. All players except the lynch candidate vote by raising their hand for yes or keeping it down for no as the moderator waves his arm around the table. Alas, asynchronicity stops me from running it that way, so the voting system for this game will be that you can vote for as many people as you want at once. Whoever has the most votes at the end of the day will be lynched, unless they have fewer votes than the majority of living players, in which case nobody dies. If there is a tie, nobody is lynched. What a terrible time for Kohai to introduce the upgraded host dashboard.

Thoth 23

Town wins!

Congratulations to Lunatic, Banana, Shining, ILikePie5, RexFavilla, wylted, and Kohai.

Most Valuable Player: Pie

For the roleblock on Magoroth that made an already bad position for scum ten times worse, for the lie about being Odd Night tricking Magoroth into not using his Strengthener, for the roleblock on Wryly that would have hurt scum terribly if she hadn't waived it, and for thoroughly living up to all of his justifications. Second place is Rex. I can't imagine I would have left Caroler unclaimed, but getting that Carol to Shining cleaned things up for town, not that I think there's any way scum could have won after the Wryly mislynch and Pie blocking Magoroth.

Setup Design

I balanced the game around Wryly's Prisoner's Dilemma, and that might have even made this setup a priori scum-sided. Aside from balancing the game around one role not being the best approach to setup design, including an every-night Roleblocker was a mistake since it could block the Prisoner's Dilemma. Wryly waived it on night 1, so Pie's Roleblocker might have helped her by letting her get the Carol since otherwise she would have been away Neighborizing Shining. It sucks that I went to all that effort to concoct a wild custom role and then it didn't get used.

You may have noticed that this setup had a lot of confirmables or semi-confirmables. I didn't do that for the sake of it. It just so happened that a lot of the justifications I thought of as I was building the setup were confirmables. I figured this would be okay because even though the Innocent Child is obviously Town-confirmable, Fruit Vendor could plausibly be scum and Oracle even more so, especially when an Innocent Child being around could make people WIFOM whether or not Town would have that many confirmables. Also, the Fruit Vendor visits someone every night unless they waive, which goes against the Caroler. Still, I probably would have been better off cutting at least one confirmable, probably Oracle because that Fruit Pie Vendor joke was too good.

Hammers

I swear that y'all are never going to learn the lesson about mishammering. I'm not going to take a stance here one way or the other about when it's good for Town to pressure someone for an early claim, but, holy fuck, you people need to clearly state your commitment to voting someone and only VTL after coordinating. Y'all probably keep your finger inside the trigger guard at the gun range. It's like y'all put your hand on a hot stove to see if it hurts, then put your other hand on it to see if that will hurt too, then come back to the kitchen five minutes later and forget that it hurt. I would say that mods should enforce some system that prevents VTLs to protect you from your own stupidity, but let's be real, nobody would go along with it. Mark my words, there will be another accidental or "accidental" hammer on day 1 within the next ten games.

Game analysis

I think this game came down to bad claims for scum, and with better claims they would have likely won, especially if Wryly had gotten the Prisoner's Dilemma off on night 1. (Good job Pie for blocking that.) I actually didn't think the Reroller claim was bad other than looking like a cover for a Mafia JOAT, but the Dirty Bomb claim was a bomb, not least because y'all know I love hosting games too much to shorten my own game like that. It seemed to me like people weren't expecting Wryly to flip scum, but her claim forced Town to lynch her. I'm sure there are a lot of other things I could say here, but I honestly think the game result boiled down to the Dirty Bomb claim.

Theme split

The theme split was supposed to be that town played on DART or DDO and scum started on DebateCraft. I had Wryly as scum because I thought she hadn't played Mafia on DART even though she was active on the site. Kohai told me that he thought Wryly played on DART as Castin. I asked Wryly, and she told me that her first Mafia game was Terraria, which started on DART and moved to DebateCraft as DART died. I guess the theme split kind of works out, but I wouldn't have had Wryly as scum if I knew about that.

Funny enough, the scum players ended up being Wryly and Magoroth, who were the only players who didn't play on DART or DDO minus the kinda-sorta in Wryly's case. Random.org gave us a double theme split.

Roles

ILikePie5 (Shining)

You win with the Town.

As either alignment, you tend to appoint yourself as town's leader and dominate the discussion. Your reputation precedes you, and it's no accident that you currently top the site's Mafia leaderboard. Some players are in awe of your aura, but some find your bravado annoying, and that Venn diagram has quite a bit of overlap. Hence, you are Popular / Hated. At the start of each day, you are randomly chosen to be Popular, requiring an extra vote to lynch, or Hated, requiring one fewer vote to lynch. You will not be told whether Popular or Hated was chosen. You cease to be Popular or Hated at MYLO / LYLO, even if MYLO / LYLO is reached during the day. You also have another trait that is well-known among Mafia regulars on DebateCraft, especially those who have hosted a game you played in. Hence, you are the Fruit Pie Vendor. Each night, you may give a target player a slice of fruit pie. This does nothing except tell them that they received the slice of fruit pie and that it was accompanied by a note telling them to submit their night actions faster next time.

Lunatic (Banana)

You win with the Town.

You are famous for your use of inventive custom roles in the games you host, which makes you the Inventor. Each day, you may give a player other than yourself one of the following Inventions, letting the recipient use the ability on that night only, if they choose to. You may hand out each Invention only once.

  1. Doctor: Target player becomes immune to lethal actions tonight.
  2. Neighborizer: Start a private Discord chat between yourself and another target player.
  3. Tracker: Learn who target player visits tonight.

Mag1cman (wylted)

You win with the Town.

In Legend of Zelda Mafia, you copy-pasted your role PM and got mod-killed for it, which immediately revealed you as innocent. In this game, we will focus more on the innocent part than on the mod-kill part, so you are the Self-Activating Innocent Child. At any time during any day before MYLO / LYLO, you may confirm your role by copy-pasting it into, or posting a screenshot of it in, the day thread and not getting mod-killed for it. WARNINGS: To use this ability, you must post your entire role PM verbatim, including these warnings. You may not use this ability once MYLO / LYLO has been reached, even if MYLO / LYLO is reached during the day. Breaking either of these rules will make copy-pasting your role PM punishable by mod-kill as usual. If it will be possible to reach MYLO / LYLO during a day after start-of-day, there will be a public warning beforehand. Obviously accidental violations of these rules will be forgiven.

Mikal (ILikePie5)

You win the Town.

Your personality tends to dominate any room, or forum thread, where you are playing Mafia, so much so that your approach to the game has been called a bullying act. In this game, you can use it to your advantage by bullying people out of their lunch money, and by lunch money, I mean night actions. You are the Roleblocker. Each night, you may target a player, blocking them from performing actions, including the night-kill, that night.

Ultracrepidarian (RexFavilla)

You win with the Town.

You have played two Mafia games on DebateCraft: Deltarune and Suikoden. In the former, you were inactive as a scummate, and in the latter you were almost completely inactive. The difficulty of reaching you makes you Ascetic, immune to non-lethal actions. In Deltarune, scum chat was apparently so inactive that you and your scummate might as well have been in Dreamland. Your ability to share Dreaming with others makes you the Caroler. Each night, you may target a player for a Carol. The Carol is a list of three players, at least one of which is scum. The list is randomly chosen from all groups of three living players which contain at least one scum. If your target visits another player, they will be away from home, so they won't hear your Carol.

Vader (Lunatic)

You win with the Town.

It has been suggested, perhaps jokingly, that you can call out the scum team when angry. It almost seems as though you are getting information from somewhere, from a supernatural source. Hence, you are the Oracle. Each night, you randomly learn one role which a living player other than yourself has. You learn the name of the role and a brief description of what it does, but not the character, justification, or which player has it. For multi-ability roles like JOAT, you do not learn what the individual abilities are. This ability does nothing if you have learned all roles possessed by living players. This action is processed after kills, so you will not learn the role of a player who dies overnight.

whiteflame (Kohai)

You win with the Town.

You are renowned for your in-depth analysis and high-quality reads. Hence, you are the Potentially Repeatable Lie Detector. Once per game, at night, you may ask the game host (Thoth) about one statement made during the previous day phase and receive a guaranteed-correct answer as to whether or not the statement was true when it was made. If your first Lie Detection returns True, you may use this ability a second time on a future night.

This statement must be a self-contained piece of information about either the role of the person who made the statement or an action they performed. Examples of statements you can Lie Detect:

  1. "I am character X"
  2. "My role is Y"
  3. "My role has an effect that does Z"
  4. "I visited W on night 1"
  5. "My justification is [supposed paraphrase of justification]"

You may not Lie Detect statements that somebody made about somebody else, nor statements which are ambiguous, unclear, or implications rather than statements. You may not Lie Detect alignment claims, e.g., "I win with the Town". If you are not sure whether or not you can Lie Detect a statement, please ask the game host before asking about the statement. Along with each statement, please tell the game host in which post it was made.

McDonaldsReal (Magoroth)

You win with the Mafia.

Your only Mafia game on DebateCraft was Casey_Risk's Deltarune game, in which you were Jevil, a Dreaming God with four abilities whose effects you were not told. This time, you are Jevil 2: Electric Boogaloo, a Mafia JOAT with four Jevilish abilities inspired by your corresponding abilities in Deltarune Mafia, and you do know what your abilities do. Each night, you may use one of these abilities. You may not use any ability more than once.

  1. DEVILSKNIFE: You will be told a random non-scum player. If that player is lynched the following day, you become a permanent night-Commuter, immune to all night actions.
  2. JEVILSTAIL: Target a player to make their night action(s), if they use any that night, immune to interference. (Note: If used on whoever is carrying the night-kill, this effectively makes them a Strongman that night.)
  3. CHAOS BOMB: Swap two target players to make other night actions that target one player that night target the other and vice versa.
  4. THE WORLD REVOLVING: Target a player to learn either who visits them that night or who they visit that night. Which of these to use is your choice.

Wryly (As Herself)

You win with the Mafia.

Like many, if not all, Mafia players, you often find that your brain isn't braining despite your love of playing the game. Sometimes you aren't sure whether your brain wants to cooperate with you or not. Hence, you are the Prisoner's Dilemma Wardeness. Once per game, at night, you may target two players to make them partake in a Prisoner's Dilemma. This action happens at night, but please declare your targets as soon as possible, preferably by the end of the previous day. Each prisoner will be told the rules of the game:

  1. You and another player have been forced to participate in a Prisoner's Dilemma.
  2. Tonight, you must choose cooperate or defect.
  3. You will be told who the other prisoner is.
  4. You may not communicate with the other prisoner. If you and the other prisoner have a line of communication, it will be shut until you have both chosen cooperate or defect.
  5. Tonight, you and the other prisoner must choose cooperate or defect.
  6. You will not be told which choice the other prisoner made until you have made your choice.
  7. If you both choose cooperate, scum learn both of your full roles.
  8. If one of you chooses defect and the other chooses cooperate, nothing happens to the defector, and the cooperator is permanently roleblocked, including abilities used tonight and on all future nights, as well as day abilities or passive abilities, if applicable.
  9. If you both choose defect, you are both roleblocked tonight.

If this action is redirected so that both targets are the same, instead you play the Prisoner's Dilemma with that player. If you play the Prisoner's Dilemma, you will not be told whether your target chose cooperate or defect until you have made your choice.

Actions

Day 1

  1. Shining becomes Hated.
  2. Banana Invents a Neighborizer for Wryly. She submitted this action after day 1 ended, but I allowed it since she couldn't have known that the day would end so early.

Night 1

  1. Lunatic learns that there is an Innocent Child.
  2. Shining sends Pie a Fruit Pie with a handwritten message telling him to get his night actions in faster next time.
  3. Magoroth kills Banana.
  4. Magoroth watches Pie. He sees himself and Shining visit.
  5. Rex sends a Carol to Wryly, which she receives. (Since scum will probably lie about the Caroler list anyway, I just told Wryly that she got a Carol instead of randomizing a list.)
  6. Pie Roleblocks Wryly.
  7. Wryly waives her Prisoner's Dilemma.
  8. Wryly attempts to Neighborize Shining, but is role-blocked, allowing her to receive the Carol. She still could have used the Neighborizer on night 2. I ran it like this by analogy with the fact that I would let someone keep a charge for an X-shot ability if they were roleblocked.

Day 2

  1. Shining becomes Hated.

Night 2

  1. Lunatic learns that there is a Popular / Hated Fruit Pie Vendor.
  2. Shining waives his Fruit Pie Vendor.
  3. Pie Roleblocks Magoroth.
  4. Magoroth kills wylted and uses DEVILSKNIFE. Both actions are Roleblocked.
  5. Rex sends a Carol to Shining, which he receives: Shining, Pie, Magoroth. (For future reference, should it be possible for the Caroler and/or the Carol recipient to appear in the Caroler list?)

Day 3

  1. Shining becomes Popular.

Wryly | As Herself | Prisoner's Dilemma Wardeness

You win with the Mafia.

Like many, if not all, Mafia players, you often find that your brain isn't braining despite your love of playing the game. Sometimes you aren't sure whether your brain wants to cooperate with you or not. Hence, you are the Prisoner's Dilemma Wardeness. Once per game, at night, you may target two players to make them partake in a Prisoner's Dilemma. Kohai | whiteflame | Potentially Repeatable Lie Detector

Killed on Night 1

Banana | Lunatic | Inventor

You win with the Town. You are famous for your use of inventive custom roles in the games you host, which makes you the Inventor. Each day, you may give a player other than yourself one of the following Inventions, letting the recipient use the ability on that night only, if they choose to. You may hand out each Invention only once.

  1. Doctor: Target player becomes immune to lethal actions tonight.
  2. Neighborizer: Start a private Discord chat between yourself and another target player.
  3. Tracker: Learn who target player visits tonight.

Boilerplate Day 1 OP Stuff That We Should All Mostly Know Anyway

  1. Do not copy-paste from your role PM. (There is one exception to this rule. You will know if it's you. So don't do it unless I have explicitly given you permission.) Do not post anything that looks like it was copy-pasted from a role card. This rule does not apply to quoting one or a few words to convey basic information, e.g., your role and character. The reasonable person test applies. If you are not sure whether or not you paraphrased enough, ask me. Do not use generative AI, e.g., ChatGPT, to paraphrase your PM. Avoid talking about the formatting of role PMs.
  2. Do not edit or delete messages.
  3. Do not post while dead or like posts while dead.
  4. Voting and unvoting in the same post is fine. Do not cast more than one vote in the same post.
  5. I will announce MYLO / LYLO. Votes can't be removed during MYLO / LYLO.
  6. Until the game is over, do not discuss it outside the approved channels, i.e., the day thread, moderator PMs, and faction chats.
  7. Do not use cryptography or otherwise post anything in the day thread with the intention of obscuring it so that only specific player(s) can read it.
  8. Be as bitchy as you want unless and until someone asks me to cool things down.
  9. I reserve the right to add commonplace or common-sense rules at any time.

Game Information

You are strongly encouraged to read everything in this section.

I use "players" to mean people who signed up for this game, and "characters" to mean the people mentioned in role PMs. So if your username on here is Thoth and your role PM says you are whiteflame, your player is Thoth and your character is whiteflame.

Roles have been assigned randomly. That should go without saying, but I might as well say it, if only to be the change I want to see.

Your character can be yourself. I wanted to avoid this by re-rolling as long as somebody was themselves, but knowing that somebody can't be a certain character could be too powerful information.

There is a theme split. Scum have been told what it is. It's not meant to be especially hard to figure out.

Role justifications and the theme split are based only on people as Mafia players. So, there are no justifications about someone's day job or real-life theme splits like women versus men.

Some justifications are clear and direct, and others are loosey-goosey. This is to give scum more leeway in fake-claiming.

The only requirement for being a character in this game is having played or hosted at least one forum Mafia game on DebateCraft. I believe this list is complete, but if there's an error or two, it doesn't really change the game.

Which of these characters are in the game was not chosen randomly. I mainly picked regulars, but I also included at least one player who would not be considered a regular or to have had much impact on this site's Mafia community. I also aimed for a healthy mix of people playing in this game versus people not playing in this game.

Scum have been given at least two character fake-claims that would be town according to the theme split. They can also get correct answers to three questions about whether or not a role is in the game. They may use these questions at any time.

The alignment split is either 7 town / 2 scum or 6 town / 2 scum / 1 third-party. If there is a third-party, their character would be town according to the theme split, their win condition is only to survive until the end of the game, they count as town for scum parity, and they have been given a role fake-claim.

In Madoka Magica, I had a rules question policy, but I didn't really follow it. In this game, I am using a more liberal question policy that I will strictly enforce. I will answer basically any question about role effects and interactions, even for hypothetical roles, 'hypothetical' meaning it's not your role, it hasn't flipped, and you haven't seen it in an investigative result. However, you must describe any hypothetical roles you ask rules questions about, even if they are common roles like Cop or Tracker. This is because: (1) different people might use the same name for different roles or vice versa; (2) if I can't promptly answer your question, it could tip you off that the role(s) you asked about are not in the game.

Town win when all threats to town have been eliminated. Mafia win at scum parity, i.e., when there are at least as many scum alive as non-scum. If there are neutrals, they have their own win conditions.

Plurality lynching is in effect. If a player gets enough votes to kill them, they die and the day ends immediately, putting the thread into twilight until I get around to close it. If a day ends with nobody having enough votes to kill them, the player with the most votes is lynched. If there is a tie for first place, votes are removed starting with the most recent and going backwards. Unvoting and voting again counts as a new vote. If there is still a tie after removing votes, then nobody voted and you should really re-evaluate your priorities.

As usual on here, days will be 72 hours maximum and nights will be 24 hours maximum, but phases might end early. This day phase ends at 6PM Central time on March 15.

Most Valuable Player: Pie

If for nothing else, then for making the right call in the final three. It was observant of you to note in day 5 that Rex, who had flipped scum, voted for Wryly on day 3, refuting whiteflame's point that scum would have known due to their fake-claims list that Wryly was a third-party and lynched Pie to set up Wryly's auto-lynch on day 4. This was a textbook case of, "Sometimes the truth is stupid." Scum apparently forgot about the fake-claims list. I know that people were surprised at a neutral being in this setup, but scum knew Wryly was not one of them and had mod confirmation that she was lying about her character.

That spectacular oversight notwithstanding, I almost want to call whiteflame a candidate for MVP due to his useful theme analysis on day 1, his success at keeping suspicion off of himself after conversion, and his late-game attempts to shift the scumlight to Vader that came shockingly close to succeeding. I suppose it would be against standard operating procedure to award MVP to anyone on a losing team.

Night Actions

Night 1

  1. Mikal substitutes for Casey overnight.
  2. Mag1c doctors Wryly.
  3. Vader redirects Mikal to Mag1c.
  4. Mikal inspects Pie, is redirected to Mag1c, and receives a positive result because Mag1c was visited by Vader's Redirector and Rex's contract offer.
  5. Wryly waives her Commuter.
  6. Rex correctly guesses Mag1c as Madoka, whiteflame as Homura, and Pie as Mami, in that order, then incorrectly guesses Kohai as Sayaka. (If you don't know what this means, see details of Kyubey's recruitment mechanic below.)
  7. Rex submits the following ranked-choice list for recruitment: whiteflame, Mag1c, Kohai, Pie, Wryly, Casey, Vader. (He was only told that Wryly was the unrecruitable player after he submitted the list.)
  8. whiteflame, Kohai, Vader, and Mikal accept the contract. (Kohai changes his mind, but, in keeping with the lore, there are no backsies.) Mag1c and Pie decline. (Isn't that redundant to point out?)
  9. whiteflame, as the first accepting player on the recruitment list, is converted to scum.
  10. Since someone higher than Wryly on the recruitment list accepted the contract, she does not get a choice of dayvig.
  11. Rex acquires Madoka's 1x Permanent Roleblock and uses it on Pie. It does nothing because Pie's Bulletproof is passive.

Night 2

  1. whiteflame kills Mag1c with Juggernaut.
  2. Mag1c doctors Mikal.
  3. Vader waives his redirect.
  4. Mikal inspects Pie and gets a negative result.
  5. Wryly Commutes.
  6. Mag1c, having died, reincarnates as Mag2c and substitutes for Mikal overnight.

Night 3

  1. whiteflame kills Mag2c.
  2. Vader redirects Kohai to Rex.
  3. Vader is randomly chosen to receive his choice of Permanent Roleblock or Rolecop, to be used that night only, from Kriemhild Gretchen. He chooses Rolecop and uses it on Rex. (Vader was also the witch's mislynch target. I rolled the witch target and who got its ability separately. It's a coincidence that Vader got both. Check out post #28 from day 1. Wryly made the most accurate observation in the game.)
  4. Mag2c inspects Rex and gets a positive result because Vader's Rolecop visited Rex, but, alas, he cannot share this information on account of dying.

Night 4

  1. whiteflame kills Kohai.

Lessons Learned

This game was the third I have run, the second I have run online, and the first with non-basic roles, without co-mods, or without having someone sign off on the setup. That in mind, I daresay that I made a good first impression, and that people enjoyed playing my setup. I made mistakes, including serious ones, and my goal is to learn not only from what went wrong, but from what could have gone wrong, so I can make my future games better without avoiding unique, flavorful mechanics like I had so much fun designing in this game.

A few concrete lessons in setup design that I learned from this game:

  1. All characters, or at least all townies and all neutrals who are likely to claim their real character, need watertight justifications that can be clearly understood by someone who knows nothing about the source material. This was a problem for Kohai / Hitomi.
  2. Ensure that it is impossible or very unlikely for the game to reach a state where there are no night actions, or far fewer night actions than the number of players. The only action on night 4 was the night-kill.
  3. Ensure that the loss of a single player can never deprive town of an entire category of power, especially not investigation. When whiteflame's conversion deprived town of its Cop, they lost most of their investigative power, and got compensation in the form of a Rolecop only by the luck of Madoka becoming the witch. Kyoko's weakness was a separate mistake that I will talk about later.

If you had told me any of these things before the game, I probably would have replied, "Well, yeah, duh", so I suppose the real lesson is to be more vigilant about following simple sanity-checks.

Setup Design

I don't remember every thought I had while making this setup or when I made every change, but I believe that everything I have written below is correct.

The theme split, so to speak, was that the girls started as non-magical, and Kyubey could convert them into magical girls, after which they might eventually fight Walpurgisnacht. While not everything fits, I would describe this game's lore as mostly the first timeline in episode 10, including things that happened before the time loop, with characters being drawn from different points in that timeline.

I originally wanted to theme this game as the first timeline in Episode 10, but I changed it because I couldn't find pictures for all the characters' role cards. Even after dropping that idea, my selection was none too varied since the only time Homura appears in the show before becoming a magical girl is in that first timeline, and for Mami and Kyoko, I was limited to one brief flashback each. (Of magical girl Hitomi, wickedest of magical screenshots, we shall not speak nor give direction.)

I was extremely miffed earlier because I thought nobody noticed that all the role cards had pre-magical girl pictures, but apparently whiteflame did catch it. All my effort was not for naught.

I wanted to give Hitomi's Emissary to Homura because, in one of the timelines in Episode 10, she went back in time to tell the other girls that Kyubey duped them, but that wouldn't fit with the theme since Homura was already a magical girl. I shifted it to Hitomi because I wanted it in the game and didn't have any better ideas for her role, and, completely my fault, I did not give her a justification for it. The Emissary was supposed to turn day 1 into a battleground, since they would know that claiming characters would harm town, whereas Kyubey would want to elicit character claims to help recruitment. I knew this role could make the game swingy since scum's options for conversion would largely be decided by how many characters they could figure out, but I included it anyway because I really hoped that it would make for a spectacular tug-of-war. Alas, the battle of claims never materialized, maybe because Rex only posted a few times on day 1, but maybe also because Kohai's warning against character-claiming matched with some people's suspicion of a recruiter. By the way, Mag1c, you were right that I was stretching jargon by calling this Emissary. I had seen Emissary in Pie's Ranger's Apprentice game, thought this was similar, and didn't know what else to call it.

Hitomi probably should have been Popular. It would have fit with Hitomi being a rich girl, giving Kohai some justification where he had none, and, when people inevitably tested his Popular claim, it would have baited votes that could have triggered his hidden ability.

Kyoko's role was probably the worst mistake in this setup. I was going to give her a solid investigative role, probably 1x Tracker/1x Watcher or every-night Watcher, but I was afraid that it could make the setup too swingy because she could see the conversion if she was lucky. I could have Ninjafied the conversion, but I felt like either would defeat the point of Tracker/Watcher, so I gave Kyoko a much weaker substitute. I probably should have, at most, made her ability unusable on night 1 like I did with Homura's Cop, and effectively with Mag1c's Doctor since recruitment replaced the kill on night 1.

Between a Doctor, 1x Bulletproof, and 1x Commuter, I wonder if I included too many protective roles.

I don't know whether or not including a third-party was a good choice, but I thought it was a cool way of working in the lore element of magical girls fighting witches, and I designed Walpurgisnacht to set them up for conflict with scum. The obvious part of that was their possible dayvig. I also figured that scum would infer that they were likely a third-party after learning they were unrecruitable, and I gave Walpurgisnacht and scum the same fake-claim list and warned both of them that the other had the same list. I figured that this could make all of them more cautious about claiming anything on there: Eine Drohung ist stärker als eine Ausführung. It played out more violently than I anticipated. If only because of the flavor I was going for, I don't believe it was bad form of Wryly to out Rex as lying about his character. She asked me if it was alright, and I said, well, witches and magical girls fight each other, so you might as well screw them over.

Sayaka had a hidden justification, so to speak. She succumbs to despair in part because she believes that her actions harmed her friends, so I gave her a role liable to hurt town, although potentially usable for good. Pie was right to call it negative utility (day 3, post #87). Homura's recruitment made Sayaka an even bigger contra-asset, since Sayaka's main way to help town would have been by moving the night-kill somewhere better, and Homura, being a perma-Commuter, was immune to this.

Speaking of Homura's Perma-Commuter, I think it was more powerful than I anticipated. I meant Madoka to be scum's prize role, and it was no good for town that Mag1c/Madoka tripped the wire for Hitomi's hidden ability, but scum may have been better off recruiting Homura and acquiring one of Madoka's abilities than they would have been recruiting Madoka.

I probably should have revealed Kyubey's recruitment mechanic when he died, regardless of when or why. I made it only reveal if he died on day 1 so he would have extra incentive to avoid being lynched on day 1, but the inevitability of being relynched on day 2 was probably enough motivation. Pie was right that not knowing how the recruitment mechanic worked made it much harder to form retrospective reads.

Recruitment mechanic

Is this the recruitment mechanic that launched a thousand ships' worth of speculation? Yes, yes it is. In its original form:

Conversion mechanic
On night 1, you must convert a player to scum. Note that you cannot die before then. Conversion replaces the night-kill.
The conversion action targets the player you convert, but cannot be blocked, redirected, or otherwise interfered with. Conversion takes place before other night actions. If the converted player had declared a night action, it is canceled. Upon being converted, the player loses their current ability, if any, and gains a new one.
Before conversion, you may guess a player's character. You will then learn that player's character and what abilities they will gain upon conversion, but not their current ability. If you guessed correctly, you can do this again, and so on until you guess incorrectly. If that player was unconvertible, you can use this ability again as though you had guessed correctly.
You then list all players but yourself in the order you will offer to convert them. The first convertible player on the list will receive this message, which is fully true but conveniently leaves out that accepting the offer will scummify them:
Kyubey wants you to make a contract with him and become a magical girl! If you accept, you will unlock at least one previously hidden ability. [If a townie was lynched on day 1: Your wish will resurrect the townie who was lynched on day 1 as Vanilla.] To accept the contract, reply: I want to become a magical girl! To decline the contract, reply: I decline your offer.
If that player declines, the next player will receive the same offer. If all convertible players decline, Mami will be converted. One player is unconvertible, and will be skipped in your list.
After conversion, you must choose one player you did not convert. You will learn which abilities they would have gained if converted and choose one of them to gain for yourself. If that player is unrecruitable, you must choose again.
On night 1, you can use the ability you gain, but the person you convert cannot use an ability they gained.

I originally planned to send contract offers one at a time, so if one person declined, then the next person got it, and so on. When the time came, I got scared that the night phase might not end in time if I did it that way, so, with Rex's blessing, I sent them out simultaneously and added a disclaimer that the contract might fail even if you accept it. The fail condition was just if someone higher on Rex's ranked-choice list had accepted.

Game analysis

I'm not going to analyze the game much in this post for two reasons. One, it's way past even my bedtime and I want this post out before I go to sleep. Two, I bet that what y'all can say about the game is better than what I could because, dare I admit it, I wasn't paying that much attention in some parts. I will be glad to discuss the game with y'all tomorrow once I return from the land of Nod. In the meantime, a few notes.

Kohai's Emissary was warning against the character-guessing part of Kyubey's recruitment mechanic. Rex got a lucky guess on whiteflame/Homura and a lucky semi-informed guess on Pie/Mami. He figured that Pie, who had complained about the show being creepy, probably had a very young-looking character, so he guessed Mami because he thought she looked babydoll-like. Ironic since Mami is probably the oldest of the bunch and is a big-sister figure to Madoka and Sayaka.

Do y'all know how hard I had to bite my tongue to say nothing when scum missed that Wryly had to be lying about her character? I'm going to be tasting iron for weeks.

If this is still a point of confusion to anyone, all recruitable players got the same contract offer. The only difference was that whiteflame got his disclaimer about how the contract might fail even if he accepted it in a separate message, since he was first on the recruitment list and I decided to send contract offers simultaneously after he got his. Vader's talk about there being two types of contract was based on a misunderstanding. The hidden abilities mentioned in the contract were the ones you would gain upon conversion. They had nothing to do with the hidden abilities mentioned in the day 1 OP, which were the ones that Hitomi and Walpurgisnacht had. I apologize if I was unclear.

72-hour day phases are back by popular demand. This day phase ends at midnight Central time on December 1. With 7 players alive, it takes 4 votes to lynch. If a majority has not been reached by end-of-day, there will be no lynch.

Died in the night

Mag1cman (Madoka, Doctor) was slain by a magical girl's weapon. Although Madoka died as Town, never having made a contract with Kyubey, you learn about the magical girl that she could have become.

Thoth 419

A magical girl made a contract with Kyubey. Her wish has prevailed over entropy.

Nobody wandered into a witch's labyrinth overnight.

A hidden ability could have been used last night, but was not. No hidden abilities remain.

This setup is based on the 2011 anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and does not include lore from movies except for the first two, which are recuts of the show.

Rules

Standard rules apply:

  1. Do not copy-paste from your role card. Do not post anything that looks like it was copy-pasted from a role card.
  3. Do not post or like posts while dead.
  4. Until the game is over, do not discuss it outside the approved channels, i.e., the day thread, moderator PMs, and faction chats.
  5. Do not use cryptography or otherwise post anything in the day thread with the intention of obscuring it so that only specific player(s) can read it.
  6. Be as bitchy as you want unless and until someone asks me to cool things down.
  7. I reserve the right to add commonplace or common-sense rules at any time.

Mod notes

  1. As usual on here, days will be 72 hours maximum and nights will be 24 hours maximum, but phases might end early.
  2. I prefer to do mod communications through Discord. DebateCraft messages work too.
  3. Setting your Discord status to invisible is strongly encouraged.
  4. All roles were assigned randomly using random.org. If there are game mechanics which require randomness, random.org will supply it. It should go without saying that randomness is random, but I might as well say it, if only to set a standard.
  5. Scum have been provided with fake-claims and/or information to help them concoct fake-claims. There may be anti-claim mechanics.
  6. There may be at least one role with a hidden ability. Your role card will mention it if you have one. Hidden abilities will be revealed with your role flip and may appear in results of investigative abilities.
  7. Ask questions about how roles work through Discord or DebateCraft messages. I will not answer such questions posted publicly. I will only answer questions which involve your own role, your scum partner's role if you are scum, or flipped roles. I will try to answer questions about how hypothetical roles would interact with roles in those three categories. You are implored to ask questions. The worst response I can give is that I cannot answer your question, which is not meant to dissuade you from asking more questions.
  8. Town win when all threats to town have been eliminated. Mafia win at scum parity, i.e., when there are at least as many scum alive as non-scum. If there are neutrals, they have their own win conditions.
Thoth 28

I was at the top of the mod queue before the current game, but ten players was non-negotiable for Culture and it seemed unlikely that I would get that many signups any time soon, so I let Mag1c run K-Pop Demon Hunters ahead of me to get the Mafia ball rolling again after about a month of inactivity. The Culture Mafia thread is still up, and I'm not sure how management is supposed to handle that, but I suppose I can hope that getting ten signups is viable by my next turn in the mod queue.

I need seven players, but eight is fine too.

The first game I ran was a simple setup on Discord. This is the second game I've run, and some modding will be done through Discord, but it is the antipode of simple.

The Culture series, written by Iain M Banks (1954-2013), consists of nine novels and a novella published from 1987 to 2012. The titular Culture is a post-scarcity anarchic utopia which is widely honored in "who would in a fight" debate communities as the most powerful faction in science fiction without time travel or comic-book-esque reality warping. Although the first published installment is Consider Phlebas (1987) and Look to Windward (2000) is a loose sequel, the books may be read in any order, and I agree with the traditional advice that newcomers should start with The Player of Games (1988).

Incidentally, I have spent the past two months or so building a Werewolf setup based on The Player of Games, but, among other challenges, it would require several times more players than I expect to get on here.

Characters in this game are drawn from different entries in the series. I do not guarantee that every book is represented, nor that the books are close to equally represented. There is sort of a theme split.

Standard rules apply, e.g., no editing or deleting posts, no ciphers or cryptography, no communicating about the game outside the game.

I prefer to do mod communications through Discord, but DebateCraft messages work too. Please make sure I have you added as a friend on Discord. You can message me your friend tag if needed.

I need ten players minimum and have built the setup with ten players in mind, but the more the merrier, and I can rebalance it if I get more than ten players.

Important Mod Notes

  1. Some night actions in this game are dependent on other night actions, so you should treat the night phase as having two 'chunks' and participate during each. Nights are 24 hours by default, but may be extended by 12 hours if needed. Please let me know beforehand if you think you may need a night extension.
  2. There is at least one mechanic which allows a dead player to interact with the game, so there will be no dead chat, and, until the game is over, dead players are forbidden from discussing the game outside of mod chat, faction chats, and the game thread.
  3. All roles will be assigned randomly using random.org. If there are game mechanics which require randomness, random.org will supply it. It should go without saying that roles are assigned randomly, but I might as well say it, if only to set a standard for others.
  4. Scum have been provided with information to help them concoct fake-claims. Also, there are anti-claim mechanics. Claiming your role and/or character may empower scum. Trying to solve the game early may be moderately dangerous.

"Lynching"

Thoth · a year ago

I hope this won't be seen as influencing the ongoing game, although Kohai closed the last thread I made and I did not think that topic would be a problem.

I don't like the word 'lynch' for voting someone out. Lynch has a strongly negative connotation, partially because it implies that the person was killed without due process, but mostly because of its association with racism. People hear 'lynch' and think of a white mob surrounding a black man hanging from a tree. That does not mean that 'lynch' is inherently racist, but it is unsalvageably steeped in racism, much like 'plantation' just means a big farm but brings to mind black slaves picking cotton.

I know that lynch become the accepted term in Mafia to the point where it mostly does not sound racist any more than the name Mafia makes us imagine that the night-kills are done by Italian men in suits, but I still don't like it, and I'm not sure whether being so used to it that we overlook the racist connotation makes it less problematic or more insidious.

I'm not trying to be a PC snowflake, but a change in terminology is overdue.

Thoth 10

This is from post #170 in day 1 of the currently running Mafia game, but I think the topic is general enough to discuss here.

We're one of the few sites where flavor claiming occurs. I almost never see mass flavor claiming. But that's a separate issue completely.

Besides my curiosity as to how many sites Kohai has played on, I would like to know how well mass flavor claiming works. The idea is that, by having everyone claim some aspect of their character early on, later fake-claiming will be harder because each person will have fewer characters to choose from. That sounds great, but is there empirical evidence that it works? Have you ever wanted to fake-claim a character as scum and then found out that doing so would have contradicted your soft-claim? In Ranger's Apprentice, I brought up gender soft-claiming (post #124) as scum because I knew that there were few important women in this series, and, with Evanlyn claimed, female claims would probably mean Alyss Mainwaring or Madelyn Altman.

Just because an idea sounds promising does not mean that it will withstand scrutiny.
