the usual rule of community growth is that bigger communities grow more easily, because more people hear about them from other people, due to communities being famous.
However, I am effectively bypassing that rule a bit by making people hear about our discord from me, instead of waiting for community to grow enough to achieve that.
And our discord seems to be doing well so far. If we keep getting 4 users per day, and 2 of those stay, its long term 600 users within a year. Long term planning and hard work for years, but sure.
Our youtube channel and google ads didnt achieve even close to same effect as private invites of discord.
I wish we could program a bot to send invites, but we gotta figure out how to make bot avoid captcha, because bots cant solve those.
Right now, I have to manually solve captcha at each invite to send invites.
When it comes to complaints from new users, I do have to take them into consideration and present their case here. And their opinion is shared by some current users too. If we cant fix voting system, then a better idea might be to just remove it because we will never have quality which pleases users. Good debater might quit site if he feels votes on his debate are unjust, and that has already happened a lot. Its not avoidable and we are not solving it by raising voting standards.
Many of the people invited from Discord, already 'have Discord, even 'if we changed, I'm doubtful they'd stick around 'too long.
If you want for site to grow, you absolutely have to listen to wishes of users, not just current users, but new users as well.
So when new users give me complaints about voting system, and then say thats their reason for quitting site, I must logically assume we would have more users if voting system was different.
Voting system will always be corrupt, but if we also make it demanding and difficult, then it just means less users long term.
As for our discord server, currently 50% of invited people who come to server, leave server. We retain about 50% so far, which is nice enough. Better than this site so far, which seems to be not retaining almost any new users, and also losing old ones, and somehow our discord seems to be more desirable than our site, so directing users to site might not even be a good idea because we are directing them to less desirable place.
You have to consider the current user base too though. They seem to care a lot more about vote quality
the current userbase has left this site just about dead. Novice quit because, in his words, "voting quality was bad" (So not everyone even thinks we have quality, so what are we offering then?). Most of top debaters from leaderboard currently dont have any debate going on or voting at all, and this is true for months now. Our discord sees more activity than this site, despite our discord not really offering anything "unique" compared to other servers.
Just because something is "unique" doesnt make it good.

Without requiring RFDs, the quality of votes goes way down to almost worthless.

Because if its more users, we aint achieving it for sure this way. two new users took issue with voting standards, and one quit the site and server, stating the voting issues on site as main reason.
You cant demand quality from new users, because thats missing the point of any idea of customer service. We are supposed to offer to users a way to express, not demand from them too much.
If users want to be able to vote on all debates freely, we are not providing that, and they quit.
So this isnt about "users can do this instead". Its about what users actually want to be able to do on the site.

User quit the site and server after, but I feel an obligation to copy paste her opinion as feedback for site, because thats what they were. I didnt copy more private messages, so I am not violating privacy.
there is no much point in inviting users if we cant make them stay. And I agree voting system sucks because we are not even getting enough votes from regular users. And new users have great difficulty with voting.
If we make site more difficult to use, less users will stay on site. Its as simple as that.

Its a competition which is effectively killing our site. Few users already messaged me about quitting site, and yeah, one of mentioned issues was a voting system. Some got their votes removed, and some complained about voting as a whole being too demanding. At this point, its not even my opinion but feedback from new users.
Just remove voting system as a whole. I dont really see point in it. "Oh a few people said you won a debate" - yeah
I will develop a new way. By sending people direct messages telling them about both server and site. that could be more interesting. Slower, but might get more users per invite.

I am not sure. I dont get many users from discord ads servers. In fact, after posting in 3 ads servers once, I dont think I got any users from there. So discord ads servers could be greatly inferior.
Also, in a way, Grateful was correct partially. Some new users are trolls who annoy users who were there for years. I am just not sure how we can grow without also having trolls come over. I need to be more picky about who I invite, I just cant figure out how to do it efficiently without too much time investment into researching users.
Yes, I do self promote in some servers, like doors. But she is busy now. She is already member of our server.
Also, this would be a lot easier if I wasn't the only one doing invites. We would get like 10x more users per day if we had a group to do this instead of just me.

You misunderstood what I was saying. So far all women in my life were controlling me to point of exhaustion. I mean, I simply can't be emotionally available for anyone.
I literally had 4 excellent debaters come to discord. But I am pausing invites currently, for now. Right now I am advertising our server in servers designed for advertising to see if that works maybe better. Of course, I prefer to farm users from actual debate sites. But I see no harm in random people joining as well. Server isnt just for debating, it has entertainment section too.
And the way even if site grew naturally is same. You would always have few bad users coming. It's not possible to grow by only getting good users.

I am not saying rules dont apply. Just our discord server, few members had trouble joining due to welcome screen and necessary clicks.
Last I checked, we're not Russian here. Quantity is not the quality we're looking for.
Quantity of members also includes some quality members. I just cant separate good debaters from bad ones when sending invites.
Inviting people requires friends. Unfortuantely I seem to lack those these days

Two, SatanLucy invited a number of randoms onto Discord, couple of them were a bit trollish, spammed some Nazi propaganda.
I invite a lot of people. Of course, the ones more likely to accept are those rejected by many other servers. But we better not be picky. Also, greatful will be happy if some muslims come to server as well. Also, few really good debaters came too, and one joined this site as well as discord. Our server needs many members so it starts showing up on google search.
Invite one hundred people to join and perhaps ten will look and perhaps one might join.
So far I did send like 200 invites and we did get about 20 new members. tho my main goal is getting permanent members.
