With rise of local AI UI programs such as Jan AI and Stability matrix lykos, which are easy to set up, does it mean online AI such as chatgpt becomes not only unnecessary, but harmful for environment?

Local AI require only few things: AI model and some program to run that model. there are very simple programs like Jan AI which you just install, download an AI model they offer, and you have local AI.

there is almost no device which cant run some local AI. Some text models are only 1 GB in size, and even smartphones can run them.

Also, in local AI, you have control over temperature and other settings which usually lacks in online AI.

Of course, online AI has access to largest database, which could potentially mean online AI is superior, but not necessarily, because you can increase settings in local AI as long as you have strong enough computer, and feeding data to AI is usually superior to just asking from online AI.

chatgpt uses almost 200 million liters of water every day, which is a lot compared to the fact that local AI uses no water at all.

Now, the main argument of environment people against AI is that AI is bad for environment because AI uses plenty of water, but that argument is completely false for local AI. Local AI uses no water and produces no great heat, not more than playing games produce.

Alright, so, I keep running into people who not only think AI is the ultimate evil, but actually think AI is terrible for environment.

their argument is that AI uses water to cool itself down, so it "wastes" water, along with creating heat which contributes to global warming.

My issue with these arguments is that they dont make much sense to begin with. All devices which use electricity produce heat.

When I use local AI on my smartphone, the amount of heat produced is less than when gaming. And my phone doesnt have any type of water cooling, obviously.

So if my phone, which isnt even a high end device, can run AI without wasting water or producing heat, I cant really imagine some ChatGPt which is installed on very high end devices and accessed by people through internet, producing some extreme heat or using too much water. I mean, computers dont usually produce plenty of heat, otherwise they would melt. they also cant use too much water, not more than what I use when I have a shower. But keep in mind chatGPt responds to over 200 million people daily, and its responses are rather cost effective, 3 watts hours per response from what I can find, which is very low energy use, google uses 0.3 watts hours from what I can find. So using google 10 times is same as using chatGPt once, so those opposed to ChatGPt should logically oppose internet search too.

As for water use, it uses less than a liter of water per response. I use more each time I wash hands. Also, water isnt a finite resource, I am not sure whats even the concern there. You literally cant run out of water.

So I really dont get the hype against AI based on environment reasons.

As AI improves, it requires less and less power because more cost effective models are developed. Soon you are going to have local AI on every smartphone which comes installed by default, for those too stupid to install local AI from a google play store.

Effect of mass is just using more resources than needed to achieve a goal and having some variety of equally good things to achieve it, to prevent accidentally failing to achieve a goal, because getting resources to exactly just enough is often impossible because it is often unknown what enough is. However, using less resources than necessary to achieve a goal is a guaranteed failure in achieving a goal.

Military strategies are always using the strong and concentrated mass to attack the crucial part of enemy forces, and that part must be weaker than the attacking force or attack fails. this is why in military warfare, picking targets is more important than merely having some great power.

Lets say A, B, C, D each have 25% chance to be correct.

Now, doing only A would leave you with 25% chance to be correct, where doing all of those: A, B, C, D increases chances of including correct thing much more than 25%.

this strategy is applied in warfare, where a crucial target is attacked by multiple different things at same time to increase chances of target being destroyed and increase percentage of destruction.

In chess, effect of mass is used where multiple different moves are considered, as a way to find best move among the conisdered ones. the more moves you consider, the greater the chance of considering best move.

In science, many different studies are needed to increase chance of study being correct and reduce chance for mistake and human error.

Now, there is also reverse effect of mass, which is something entirely different, a whole different principle which is usually mentioned in religious debates.

Reverse effect of mass means doing less things reduces chances of doing incorrect thing which could cause a goal to not be achieved.

Reverse effect of mass isnt commonly accepted in strategies where goal is known, because goal is rarely achieved by doing nothing.

However, if goal is to do nothing, or if doing nothing achieves a goal, reverse effect of mass applies.

But this is common argument in religion: We dont know what goal has God set for us, and that goal could be to simply do nothing, and if we do something, goal isnt achieved.

Also, there could be anti-goals, where God doesnt want us to do certain things, and when we dont know what those things are, doing anything increases chances of doing incorrect thing.

But problem with this argument is that there is a chance God doesnt want us to do nothing, so doing nothing could be bad as well.

this is why reverse effect of mass doesnt work for religion, but effect of mass does.

Doing more things, more different prayers, more different good deeds, more divine conversations, more religious drawings and more different symbols, more different ways of worshipping God, practicing many names for God, religious sounds and music, more different offerings... increases option-chances of some correct thing being done there.

So even if some incorrect things are done, many correct things would likely be done too, if we go by option-percentage, which is number of chosen options to number of possible options ratio.
