What most people fail to understand is that often the only reason they hate some people is because better people appear.

this is usually called "relative value" affected by comparison.

But the comparison actually only begins to show truth once you apply worst case standard for comparison.

to person who has many friends and plenty of options in life, such person naturally moves to best available options.

But to a very lonely person, almost any other person is welcome to be friend because alternative is no friends and no one to talk to.

this is also true in relationships. Women pick from what is best among available. But if the only available men are bad men, women will pick them.

Person who has plenty of money usually chooses other people who have plenty of money, to be friends with, and can be picky about who to hang out with, and doesnt need to be kind to most people.

Person who is very poor, on the other hand, will happily be friends with anyone generous enough to provide help.

Standards are usually made by comparison.

there are things person would never accept under any circumstances. these are "worst case" standards. Anything above them is generally accepted depending on circumstances and available options.

And people often have wrong idea about what their "worst case standards" are. But best way to establish what they are is by experiencing lack.

Experiencing lack of all better options truly shows if some option is then acceptable or not.

Same with people. You might hate trump, but if he and you were last people on Earth, you would quickly become friends because alternative would be eternal loneliness.

People often experience severe drop in standards once they actually experience a complete lack. And people who have abundance usually experience rise in their standards.

this is why stoicism is about experiencing lack, to find out if things have value when no better options exist.

Because value is a very relative thing, and depends entirely on what is available in the first place. For example, I can set my standards very high, but if nothing in reality matches them, then my standards fail and leave me in complete lack of anything to satisfy them.

So standards naturally move as reality moves. Person who lacks food for a long time appreciates food more. Person who lacks water for a longer time appreciates water more. Person who is poor appreciates more any display of kindness. Person who has complete lack, appreciates almost anything to remove a lack.

Once you realize that the only reason you hate a lot of people is because better people exist, and if those better people didnt exist, you would actually stop hating the people you hate, you begin understanding stoic philosophy more.

Because value is found in lack. Sure, if I have million dollars, I wont appreciate at all someone giving me 10$ randomly, I might even feel insulted. But if I am on streets starving, no money for food, and someone gives me 10$, I begin to see that person as my savior. Exactly same action valued completely differently due to available options.

Dont make the mistake of overmoderation. Any punishment for activity discourages activity as a whole. this site will only grow good if it can please greatest variety of users, and forcing all users into one same behavior type loses a lot of users. One can only afford to raise standards once one can afford to lose users, and right now I would welcome even worst trolls on this site because almost anything is better than a site with no activity.

Also, I have said this before, someone should program live chat for this site, similar to discord chat where you can see who is typing, who is online...ect. I mean, just tell Claude AI to do it. this site needs innovation and variety. We need to be more like discord or tik tok with their group chats, and less like some forum from year 2000.

People hate vote removals already

I suggest not doing vote removals at all in rated debates. Any punishment to voters acts to discourage voting. Let people compete in chaos. Chaos is more fun.

We can still talk to our AI girl on debate art. Its not all lost yet. I knew debate art will still prove itself to be useful.

I think human plus AI does a lot more than just human. And it also depends on what group are you working with. Sure, I get good ideas from humans too, but there must be careful selection and fact check by AI as well. Merely listening to other humans gets you nowhere, because you have no time to listen to everyone in the world. One must be picky and also lucky not to fall victim of terrible advice.

they ban debby, it doesnt fix the problem (obviously). So they either admit they were wrong about banning users to solve problems (which they wont do), or they keep going down slippery slope thinking banning even more users will eventually fix problem (which it wont).

It feels like a lot of users are playing some form of mafia game with user bans. Of course, its good to have democracy on site, but not good if it will turn into two wolves and sheep voting whats for dinner.

Humans are very bad at fixing their mistakes. At this point, I wouldnt oppose to AI government, because AI is simply better than human politicians.

Personally, I dont care that much about Debby's spam. Its easy to scroll past it.

And maybe new users will be more entertaining, but we know from experience that new users are mostly just temporary. Getting a permanent new user is difficult, irrelevant of how many permanent users you ban.

to me, it seems pointless to ban permanent users in an attempt to gain more of permanent users.

But once you start blaming some users for site's slow growth, you enter a slippery slope. Because if site's growth keeps being slow, then you must logically ban even more users because you start from assumption that current users are responsible for that.

And as Debate art showed, even when all users from it moved to new site, debate art didnt magically gain new permanent users.

Because to gain users, you must be a hot search. When someone types "debate site", if your site doesnt come up in first 3 results, you are not a hot search.

If someone types "good debating site", and your site doesnt come up, you are not a hot search.

Being a hot search is important, because thousands of people every day search for a good debate site, and they usually get dragged into few first search results.

Algorithm is simply everything. And algorithm favors sites which payed a lot to google to place them there.

So instead of trying to attract new users which might never come to stay permanently, a better strategy is to maintain current user base.

Not everyone is happy with Debby being banned. I can understand the arguments for her ban,

but question is, will her ban make current users more active?

We know from experience once debate art started with bans and punishments for users, it didnt increase its user base, but quite the opposite.

I am not saying no one should ever be banned, but to me, it seems like ban should only be used when its obvious that it must be used.

Because that is most reasonable approach. If you are focusing on imaginary probabilities, miscalculation easily happens. Bans should only happen when its most obvious undeniable harm to site. Anything other than that risks being a miscalculation.

I am not a moderator, nor I wanted debby banned. I assume for AI spam, because she was spamming a lot. I think banning her is essentially a slippery slope, and also unnecessary and doesnt achieve anything. Person should always work based on goals and their achievements. Sometimes being nice achieves a goal. At other times, it doesnt. Reality is, you want to know every trick there is, so that you can use it when necessary to achieve a goal.

Achieving goal isnt always done by being a nice polite debater who always follows rules of civil debate.

Reality is, in real life, people will interrupt you, ignore your points, gish gallop you, even use Machiavellism to delay response and then attack your character or question your debating ability itself, or even strawman your position into countless strawmans, or impose their own goals on you, to make it seem you have to achieve goals they set for you.

Debating isnt nice. Its dirty. Its something where you are one wrong sentence away from defeat. Its something where any previous mistake you made can be used against you. Its something where people dont even have to respond to arguments, merely show that the one who makes them sometimes makes mistakes.

You want to follow rules, alright. But the greatest debating method still remains "be without position". When you dont take any specific position on something, it becomes much harder to attack you. Anyone who makes position, framework, or definitions becomes open to attack, and the attacker doesnt even have to be honest about what your arguments actually say.

It is much better to let them talk, let them take their position, let them make arguments, and wait, delay response, and then just challenge what their whole case depends upon, such as a definition, assumption or contradiction, or unproved premise, or use one of those well tested arguments which there is no defense against, such as circular reasoning in basic logic, arbitrary goals and definitions, circularity of definitions, undefined words in definition, subjective morality, uncertainty principle...ect. this is much easier way of debating than the full dedication to debate, and most people dont care for how dedicated you are to debating or how much you follow civil rules. they couldnt care less.

I dont really care much about women's issues. I think if I wanted, I could get a girlfriend easily, but the problem is that maintaining such a relationship is a lot of effort with low reward. Last big relationship with a woman for me was just terrible, even for an online relationship, she started to control me and demanding that I chat with her constantly.
