Thoth
Nobody has even given a reason as to why mass claim is bad. It’s all just “but if scum learns our roles”

Yes, that’s the reason

Thoth
I haven’t yet looked at my flavour in any detail

I swear that I am the only person who reads their role PM.

Thoth
My final ability is Framer

This is so Too Wolfy To Be A Wolf that it loops around to being just wolfy and then back to TWTBAW et cetera ad infinitum. The glass of WIFOM shattered and reincarnated as a Klein bottle.

Thoth
Btw it’s interesting a major reason you are scum reading me is for my read on mago, yet you also list him as a scum read. So in other words your theory is we are bussing lol?

No, my theory is that you hitched yourself to the Magoroth wagon because it looked like an easy mislynch, which fits with the rest of your PoE being the then-inactives.

Thoth

I don’t think I ever said that my role was especially powerful, just that it was almost useless at low favor. If I get more favor, it could be very powerful, but it’s also situational.

Thoth
Mafia Doctor is just a Doctor who is of the Mafia alignment. Identical night action, differenr alignment. Reason I say Mafia doctor (probably) doesn’t exist is that you don’t need a fake claim when you’re Mafia doctor; you can just visit w townie player at night, heal them over and over. Bulletproof alibi because most of the time Doctor is a Town role.

Doesn't that mean you can only "confirm" yourself by blocking your own team's night-kill, and otherwise all your role does is visit someone? (I wonder if that role has a name.)

Thoth

I would probably scumread other people for doing this, but my role is next to useless until I rank up. So please make it rain in my direction, your majesty.

Thoth
wait a sec how does he know there is ten towns?! why is that a town slip?

I was thinking he might have forgotten that the Emperor doesn't have a vote, in which case ten towns would mean only one scum. Scum would have to be pretty good actors to feign that mistake. But, now that I think about it, he might have been including the Emperor as one of the ten towns.

Thoth

I might expand on my list of reads later today, but more likely I won't, especially since it's mainly gutreads.

Vader: Mod-confirmed town.

Thoth: From my vantage point, also mod-confirmed town.

Pie: Null. From Pie, a move as bold as claiming that he becomes super-powerful if he gets enough favor is NAI. From some other players, I would probably townread it.

whiteflame: Null. He's contributed solid analysis, as he usually does on day 1 regardless of alignment.

Banana: Null. She made some decent points. Nothing she said swung my read of her in either direction.

Wylted: Solid town. He supposedly sucks at fake-claiming, but his teammates could have concocted something for him. Something in the back of my mind wonders if his claim of Miller upon reaching Imperial Noble Consort could be a cover for a Godfather he loses at that level. In any case, I feel okay about this claim. If wylted flips scum, I would become a lot more sus of Pie since Pie asking wylted to specify his SOP-claim could have been staged.

Magoroth: Slight scum. I think that pushing for a massclaim is majorly scummy, but some of the things he has said give me misguided-town vibes. The mention of ten townies (post #153) came off as a townslip, like he forgot that the Emperor doesn't count for voting purposes. If he's scum, that is some excellent method acting. Claiming an NAI role (Watcher/Lookout) is not a point in his favor.

Wryly: Slight scum. The points she makes look good, but something about the way she says them seems off to me. I almost feel like her reaction to Magoroth's massclaim suggestion came off as distancing.

Lunatic: Slight scum. This is a pure gutread, but the amount of text he spent bashing Magoroth in post #233 compared to the rest of his reads in #234 triggered my scum-pushing-for-easy-day-1-mislynch alert, even though I generally agree with his points. Then saying that his PoE is two inactives and the guy that people are scumreading also strikes me as possible mislynch-pushing. Other than that, I like his posts.

For everyone else, there is as yet insufficient information for a meaningful read.

Thoth

That should have been redirected with a lowercase r. I meant any redirective role, not just Redirector.

Thoth

If a Mafia Doctor is just a regular Doctor flipped over the alignment axis, it's nothing but negative utility for scum, and then only if it gets Redirected. I guess it could be of some use to scum if there were a third-party night-killer like an SK.

Thoth
The scummiest part was asking everyone to reveal how much favor people start with. Like that is so direct, and I can’t believe everyone missed that so far in what I’ve read

I guess I missed that favor and ranks were hidden. Somehow I thought we were going to get a public leaderboard every day.

Thoth

There are some details in my PM that I think are safe to claim and which I very much doubt Rex sabotaged like he talked about in the OP, but I don't really see how they would advance the game.

Thoth
I notice Pie hasn't talked much. No matter.

That's NAI for Pie, and by NAI I mean Needs an Ambulance Instantly.

Thoth
Example, let’s say hypothetically that I am scum and I see no protective roles. I claim Bodyguard or some thing. A bodyguard should visit an investigative role or someone who is very Towny. Why did I visit someone who is scummy?

Redirector?

Thoth
if we mass claim, the ten towns are probably going to tell the truth.

Numerically, this is more of an eleven-player game than a twelve-player game, so there are probably eight or nine townies other than the Emperor. I'm seeing this as a townslip.

Thoth
They may, but they might also not. In the absence of any claims, they might fake claim something other than the claim they were given to get out of a tough spot.

In the absence of any claims, they might claim something that gets them caught, maybe the covers Rex gave them or maybe not, because they couldn't construct a claim that fits with the others. You seem so emotionally invested in this that you can only look at one side of the picture.

Thoth
I notice Pie hasn't talked much. No matter. With the topic of Mago, I feel like he is REALLY pushing for mass claim and I'm not sure hes scummy for it. If I was his buddy, I would be telling him to chill. Still, we should mass claim no sooner than DP2, at least. DP1 is just madness.

I think that he's either misguided town or scum who knows something about the setup that we don't. I suppose he could be scum playing for Too Wolfy To Be A Wolf cred. I don't know whether he does things like that or not.

Thoth
I still think it’s a good idea to mass claim. We get more information that way, not less.

There ain't no disagreeing with that. The question is who benefits the most from that information.

I assume the scum can also influence favour in some way, e.g. through stealing favour from others.

It wouldn't shock me, but unless I missed something, I don't think this is a safe assumption, and I also feel that it would go against this game's flavor of haremesses charming the Emperor.

Scum can lie, but then they would have to use their role and prove it.

There is more than one problem with this statement, but just to start somewhere, some roles are not tied to one alignment. Your own claim could be cover for a Lookout. Also, if scum have manipulative or redirective roles, we might end up failing to solve the puzzle even with all the supposed pieces on the table. The worst-case scenario for a mass-claim, and it's not a remote possibility, is that scum know the entire setup and we catch nobody, or, worse, snap the pieces together incorrectly and mislynch.

Thoth
We don't know what happens when scum gets favor so a conservative strategy I think is to reserve favor for strong town reads

We don't know what abilities they have or can get, but it would be shocking if scum did not gain and lose abilities with favor like town do, so this kinda goes without saying.

Thoth

I say that because I am pretty sure that Rex invented this setup and has never run it before. Correct me if I am wrong.

Thoth

Let me put that differently. Massclaiming here might be in town's favor, or it might be in scum's favor. I don't know. I have no past games to reference. Since we are all at least partially newbies here, we should play it safe. Playing it safe means no massclaims.

Thoth
I still think we should mass claim what abilities we have access to.

I've sometimes wondered if the optimal strategy for closed-setup games is to force everyone to immediately massclaim and then hunt for contradictions. I also don't think that this is the right game to test it. I think a lot of us barely understand the basic setup, and none of us have any experience playing it. Laying our cards on the table will give scum an informational advantage.

Thoth
#1. So I took a look at the setup again. I thought that Imperial Noble Consort knowing “all abilities” or whatever meant they knew literally all abilities, and given that scum had two fake claims I thought they would know this “more”’.

I take it you mean Empress. Completely understandable. Consider that point dropped.

#2. Yes, it’s scummy to justify your vote in RVS. If it’s random, then why justify it?

Because the alternative is VTLing with no explanation? Someone might look at it and wrongly think that I had a specific reason to sus Mikal, but did not mention it. Saying that the vote is random does not change whether or not it is actually random.

#3. Just vote her and we’ll find out how many thoughts she’s had. She has clear trouble producing original thoughts, and I think I’ve had more than she’s had.

We vote her and... find out how many thoughts she's had? How does that work? Do you cut her in half and count the rings? I agree that more people have produced original thoughts than I have.

Thoth

In response to post #27, it would be interesting if scum are concubines who have not done heinous shit.

Thoth
So, wait, what's the issue with Magoroth now? Awesome says his "posts are atrocious" and Wylted's just buying in because he trusts Awesome. I guess the pushback on softclaiming flavor is a little off because he's almost defensive of scum here (who have been given two fake claims anyway), but nothing has looked that bad.

Based on a quick "ISO" (Profile page > Mafia > Comments):

  1. Post #29: Suggesting that Empress should fullclaim. I don't completely scumread this, but I don't like it. Also, the inexplicable statement that scum probably know which abilities are in the game almost strikes me as a scumslip. Probably not, but I have no clue where he got that idea. On your home site, do scum usually know town's roles?
  2. Post #57: Voting me because it's supposedly scummy to justify Random Vote Start as Random Vote Start. Compared to what? Voting someone with no explanation, or not voting at all?
  3. Post #104: Voting Wryly for having "trouble producing thoughts". I could be missing something here, but Wryly hasn't seemed incoherent or unthinking this game. Maybe she's being inclined to post fluff, but I can hardly blame her since there's not that much information to work with. I don't think that Magoroth has contributed much more than Wryly has.
