I am unfortunately too busy today. I might be able to get back on around 5. But I will say this: town will suffer if I am mislynched today as opposed to in the next few dps. If you have a scum read on me keep me in your POE or whatever. But I wouldn't lynch me DP1.

That's going to be a problem since the DP will likely end before then.

whiteflame

With so little time remaining, we’ve got to push in a direction.

I’m not entirely opposed to the Mikal lynch. I think he’s town, but his relative absence from the DP combined with a negative utility role that could push us into dangerous territory if he gets NK’d along with someone else places him on the chopping block. I think Magic’s right that his claim wasn’t the smartest choice for him, but if he really is just this busy, I don’t think he was taking the time to weigh the options and make the optimal decision.

I’m also willing to push and, depending on his claim at least, lynch REF. I’m not the only one who has sussed his posts so far this game and he’s likely to be the focus of attention in future DPs regardless. I don’t love how he’s pushing attention onto Magic in particular on the basis that he didn’t rile in response to what REF claimed without substatiation was a hard sus on him. We already have two full claims on the table as well as an almost character claim from Luna, so I’m hesitant to get too much info this DP. That’s what is holding me back from pushing for his claim, but we’re not getting anywhere. I’d like to at least see REF get more active in these last several hours, so:

VTL REF

?? Is there some bizarre rule where you can only townread someone based on their reaction to a reaction test? Wouldn't that make reaction tests completely useless?

I said I found it odd that you included the reaction test (which proceeded to get no reaction), then turned around and said that one of your scumreads was real. It's odd to put the test out there, never draw attention to it again, and then just claim a set of reads that includes one of the people on your reaction test as an actual scumread. I find all that pretty puzzling.

I found it odd that Magic is dissecting everything in this game in minute detail and is trying to start discussions with random number tests but didn't speculate at all when I hard scum-read him out of the blue. Isn't responding to that a better opportunity to start engagement/activity ex nihilo than wondering why someone picked a random number?

Considering the collective lack of attention on your reaction test, it's hard to read whether he just missed it or didn't take it seriously. If it's the latter, the lack of follow-up definitely didn't help since it was just a statement out of the blue and you were gone for a long stretch afterward. Just a weird way to run a reaction test and while it is odd that he didn't address it, it's difficult to read given the circumstances.

whiteflame

Well, contrary to that first line, I ended up just doing all my reads. They're not extensive, but there's just not a lot to go off of for a good number of you. I also recognize that picking two of the least active players as null (Casey) and slight scum (REF) respectively is the easy out, but that's made them outliers that I can't ignore.

whiteflame

So we're just missing Casey's softclaim. I'll post a set of reads tonight, though for now, I'm still leaning town on both Mikal and RT. It's not impossible that either of them are just covering for other roles (or in the case of the latter, just claiming their actual role as scum), but it's not what I think is most likely at this stage. Nothing about their behavior so far has really moved the needle, though Mikal's lack of activity means there's just not a lot to read at all.

Harder to read anyone else. Magic's gambit with the number selection was odd, but I can at least see the logic there, even if it didn't pan out as he'd hoped. It comes off as trying to gin up activity and get a little bit of behavioral info, but it could just as easily be a pretty random way to draw attention. If I had to read it, I'd say I'm very slight town on the effort.

Thoth's analysis has been good this game, just can't say that it's pushing me either way as I read back through it, at least beyond a basic gutread. I haven't seen him as scum, so I don't have an indicator of any differences in his scum play, but this all looks pretty akin to last game.

Casey's null to me. I usually have a hard time reading Casey this early and this is no different. Their participation has been in and out, and it's especially hard to read the only person who really hasn't posted all day and left us with no information about their character. When Casey is around, they're reading and participating, but nothing that really pulls me one way or the other.

I've got a slight townread on Luna, if only because I don't think he gives away that he's part of that set of three characters mentioned by Wryly as scum. I think he'd be more coy about it, especially since Morgarath has already been sussed a bit. It's not a lot to go on, since the aim could always be to suggest he's one of them and then develop fake claims for at least two of them given that he's essentially being given character options.

The lack of shit to go off of with REF really hurts my read on him. At minimum, he's null, but I don't love that he started with a reaction test saying he was scumreading Magic and Wryly, then come around with a set of reads that still places one of them as scum. I'm just not sure what to make of his lack of effort this game, but what little effort he is putting in rubs me the wrong way. Slight scum.

I'm slight town on Wryly. In particular, her digging into Luna's likely character claim doesn't come off as something scum would mention publicly. This is the kind of thing Luna and I would talk about extensively in scum chat to nail down who everyone was and try to figure out their roles, it's just a little strange to put that out there as town.

whiteflame

Oh, and Luna confirmed that he's one of a few characters all of whom are male (should've put that in the above list, but I've corrected it here), so I think that more than suffices for him. Right now,

Whiteflame - Male

Casey

Lunatic - Male (one of three listed characters, see post #138)

Mikal - Evanlyn Wheeler - Compulsive Hider

RationalTheist - Tug - Asceticiser

REF - Indeterminate ("unknown" or "both")

Thoth - Male

Magicman - Male

Wryly - Male

Three left. I agree with Wryly that this might not tell us much, but we need more than we have to inform lynches and this is a place to start.

whiteflame

Cool. Alright, putting this around to others, looking for character softclaims. I won't tag Mikal or RT on this since they already claimed their characters. Also, just to keep track:

Whiteflame - Male

Casey

Lunatic

Mikal - Evanlyn Wheeler - Compulsive Hider

RationalTheist - Tug - Asceticiser

REF

Thoth - Male

Magicman

Wryly

Do we want to get out gender soft-claims like last game? I'm surprised that hasn't been brought up yet.

I'm good with this. I don't think we've gotten a lot of insight yet and I think we need as much as we can get before we start poking for lynches. I'll start:

I'm male.

Since you suggested it, I'll insist that you go next.

whiteflame

That doesn't really answer the question, though. Are they "immune" to visits, i.e. would the visit fail? Would the visit be successful and he just wouldn't Hide behind you? I understand if you may not be able to get the answer to that question since you're asking about a hypothetical role aside from your own (Pie just told me he can't answer any questions about hypothetical roles that aren't mine), so it might just have to be a question that Mikal asks.

whiteflame

Alright, so it does seem like Magic was just trying to examine reactions, which is fine. Good to try any tactic we've got and there's not a lot going on, so it was a decent way to increase discussion.

I can't speak much to the character claims so far. The Hider role does seem pretty well justified for Evanlyn. The Asceticiser justification seems looser for Tug, though I can kind of see where it's coming from. I know a couple of people (at least Casey from what I've seen) have mentioned the odd interaction between their two roles. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some odd role interactions in play, but I'm unclear on how this would even work. Assuming that they're both real and Mikal visits the Asceticised player, does his Hider just cease to function and as a result and he just visits the target? Does the visit fail? I read over the Ascetic role again to see if there were any hints and it may just function as normal. The Ascetic player stops roles from affecting them. A Hider doesn't affect their target per se, and as far as I know, Ascetic players do not prevent visits, just the effects of roles used on them. It's worth asking about and I'd definitely want both Mikal and RT to put that question to Pie. I'll try to get an answer as well.

whiteflame

Maybe Magic’s trying to garner behavioral info from our responses? Gin up more conversation? Honestly not sure what he’d glean from it, but I’m prepared to learn.

whiteflame
Seems pretty obvious to me that the names correlate to the numbered list given in the OP.

And this is what lack of attention to basic information in the DP is netting me. Thank you for pointing out the obvious, I feel kinda silly for asking.

whiteflame
Am I a joke to you

I’m clearly just challenged in my reading capabilities. Yes, it appears you too have a different name next to your number choice. Any idea what that’s about?

whiteflame
Results:
Casey: 3 (Lunatic)
Thoth: 7 (Thoth)
RT: 5 (RT)
Whiteflame: 1 (Whiteflame)
Wryly: 4 (Mikal)

Since we’re openly discussing the number thing, I have to ask: why is Casey the only one with a different name next to their number?

whiteflame
im gonna ask: Is there a specific mechanical idea you get I was hinting at?

If I had another reason for selecting that number, I would have given it. I've answered your earlier question as thoroughly as I am able. Aside from the assumption that, since you were asking for numbers from 1-8 and therefore it likely applied to the other 8 players beyond yourself, I had (and still have) no idea what the numbers suggest.

whiteflame

I didn't think about it much in the moment. I picked a number I thought was random. I'm interrogating ex post facto why how that choice was likely biased by existing picks. I don't know what else I can say to explain this.

whiteflame

I'm saying that I didn't have much reasoning for doing it and that what I thought was random at the time was likely driven by where the numbers were trending.

whiteflame

I'd say it was random, but if I had to guess, it was probably because the numbers were trending higher and I noticed both 1 and 2 weren't taken. Decided to fill that gap and made a coin flip choice between them.

whiteflame
NAI?

I might be insulting everyone's intelligence by pointing this out, but 9 players minus Magicman makes 8, so his role might have some seat-based mechanic.

Has anyone seen a mechanic that fits with what Magic is asking us to do?

Not Alignment Indicative.

I was really trying to avoid discussing how his search for numbers 1-8 could affect the game, but I guess if we're talking about it, fine. At least from the way it's been brought up so far, it clearly involves some choice among the remaining 8 players beyond him, yes.

A verifiable visit? You wouldn't have accidentally admitting to knowing there is a way to verify it, would you? That is, unless the person behind whom Compulsive Hider hides normally receives an alert. However, without knowing enough about this site's role-setup meta to know how likely it is that someone can verify his claim, or at least that he can visit someone, I tentatively agree with your townread since claiming a visiting role is probably risky.

If I was someone who could monitor visits, I wouldn't have mentioned anything and just hoped I'd verify it. So no, I'll go so far as to say that I am not someone who can verify his visits.

I was responding to RT, although Casey did agree, and I meant my response less as a statement than as an open question in case I overlooked something. I suppose you could read it as RT and Mikal or Casey concocting a fake claim, coming up with a poorly thought-out justification for it, and metaphorically nodding their heads at each other. I also think Mister Fantastic would be impressed at that reach.

You're right. I saw Casey say something about the Asceticiser somehow pairing well with Hider, which is what I thought you were responding to. I'm more focused on why Casey would make that statement rather than RT and Mikal being involved somehow in generating that fake claim with Casey's backing. I think they're both town, so I can't say I think that's happening.

whiteflame

Alright, I haven't had much time to spend on this, but I'll give some initial thoughts.

I'm fine waiting to see what Mag1c's cooking up with this #1-8 selection. Can't say I know where he's going with it, but the whole thing is weird enough that it's NAI and I'm curious.

Mikal's SOP claim makes me lightly townread him. At the very least, it would be a strange choice to give him to fake claim a role with a verifiable visit that should happen every NP.

More difficult to read into RT's decision to SOP claim Asceticiser, but I'm still lightly townreading him. It's possible that he's a scum Asceticiser, but otherwise, this would be another instance of SOP claiming a role that could be verified or denied fairly easily.

Apart from that, just a minor behavioral read. I agree with Thoth that it's a bit odd for Casey to say that the Hider and Asceticizer somehow complement one another. It's a weird thing for Casey to call out at all, but not really a reason for me to read Casey as scummy or townie, just something odd I clocked.

whiteflame

Did not realize this had started. I’ll be able to contribute more to this DP a little later tonight. I know absolutely nothing about the theme, but I’ve caught up on the DP. All I’ll say for now is that RT probably shouldn’t have claimed his Asceticizer (it’s not SOP), though Mikal’s makes sense.

Matter of fact, everyone go ahead and pick a number between 1 and 8.

There was definitely some luck involved in how this played out, so I could see this being very swingy. I had a pretty solid townread on RT and with his Popular claim, I knew a) that he wasn't likely to be the NK target, and b) that my Caroler role would work on him. If not for that, I would have had to aim in the dark, and my top town picks would likely have been Luna and McDonalds, both of whom were town... but both of whom also had night actions, so my role would have failed.

In any case, that really only narrowed the window. Well done to town for managing all the information well and using it to zero in on scum. And as has been said so far, McDonalds really impressed me this game. Usually have a much harder time reading a new player, but he made it pretty easy and was active and helpful.
